After a record-breaking year in 2017, South Carolina saw its first officer-involved shooting of 2018 in North Charleston, S.C. this week.
The incident occurred early Wednesday morning at a Spinx convenience store located at 4895 Ashley Phosphate Road near the Joint Base Charleston military installation.
According to our sources, two North Charleston, S.C. police officers – one a white male and the other an Asian male – exchanged gunfire around 5:00 a.m. EST with a black male and white male suspect during an armed robbery of the convenience store.
The officers responded to the robbery after the suspects matched the description of two suspects involved in an earlier robbery at a Circle K convenience store on the same street.
One of the suspects was wounded during the gunfight and transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were no other injuries in connection with the incident.
Both suspects are in police custody.
As with all officer-involved shootings in the Palmetto State, the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) will investigate the incident and forward its findings to the solicitor with jurisdiction over the county where the incident took place.
In this case, that’s S.C. ninth circuit solicitor Scarlett Wilson.
South Carolina had 49 officer-involved shootings in 2017, breaking the previous record of 48 set in 2015.
