A day after his name was dragged through the mud in open court in connection with an ongoing anti-corruption investigation, South Carolina attorney general Alan Wilson “announced” a $586 million legal settlement tangentially involving his office.
There’s a catch, though …
The settlement with Colorado-based Western Union ostensibly “announced” by Wilson on Thursday was actually reached by the federal government … eleven months ago.
Don’t believe us? Here’s Federal Trade Commission (FTC)’s press release from January announcing the agreement.
Hell, it’s been over a month since the FTC announced the launch of its claims program related to the Western Union settlement.
Yet here we have Wilson parading this news around as if it just happened … and as if it was his office breaking it.

“Con-artists are always coming up with ways to trick people out of their hard-earned money,” Wilson said in Thursday’s release from his office.
Con artists … like his political intimates?
Don’t get us wrong … we’re glad Wilson is alerting South Carolinians as to how they can file a claim if they were victimized by a Western Union-related fraud (which, by the way, is to contact the feds – not his office). But this “announcement” strikes us as nothing more than a transparent effort to populate the state’s news feed with something other than Wilson’s proximity to the ongoing #ProbeGate investigation.
