The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is seeking assistance from the public as it searches for suspects connected to a brutal double homicide that took place during a barroom brawl in McCormick County.

During the early morning hours of November 24 – the day after Thanksgiving – 34-year-old Steven Banks of McCormick, S.C. and 44-year-old Joel Turner of Greenwood, S.C. were patronizing Sapps Bar and Grill, located on Highway 378 in McCormick County.

An estimated 200 people were at this establishment when a fight broke out that spilled into the parking lot.

“During the melee outside, someone shot and killed Banks and Turner,” a news release from SLED stated.

SLED has been assisting McCormick County law enforcement personnel in an effort to interview all of the individuals who were at the establishment at the time of the shooting.

“While a number of (patrons) have been interviewed, information is still needed that could lead to identifying the shooter or shooters,” SLED’s release added.

Individuals with information related to this crime are encouraged to contact SLED special agent Clint Busbee at 803-896-7250, investigator Deidra Collier with the McCormick County Sheriff’s Office at 864-465-3200 or anonymously call Crimestoppers at 888-274-6372.
