Former South Carolina first lady Iris Campbell passed away on Tuesday morning, sources close to the Campbell family confirmed to this news site.
She was 77 years old.
The wife of two-term GOP governor Carroll Campbell was found non-responsive at her coastal home on DeBordieu in Georgetown County, S.C., we’re told.
Carroll Campbell was governor of South Carolina from 1987 to 1995. Prior to that, he represented the state’s fourth congressional district in the U.S. Congress from 1979 to 1987. The former governor – who left office with a 72 percent approval rating – died in 2005 of a heart attack four years after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
Iris Campbell remained active in Palmetto politics even after her husband’s death, issuing endorsements in presidential primary elections and supporting the political campaigns of her two children, Tumpy Campbell and Mike Campbell.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Campbell family …
