Businesswoman Nancy Mace’s front-running campaign for South Carolina House District 99 received a big boost this week from the most fiscally conservative member of the S.C. General Assembly.
Tom Davis – who has become a hero to fiscal conservatives across the state thanks to his staunch advocacy on behalf of taxpayers – formally endorsed Mace’s candidacy this week.
“We need common sense perspectives in Columbia now more than ever, but more importantly we need people of principle who have consistently demonstrated the courage and integrity to stand for what they believe in,” Davis said. “Nancy Mace has shown that courage and integrity throughout her life, and the citizens of Berkeley and Charleston counties would be well-served by having her as their voice at the State House.”
“Nancy is attracting support because of her work ethic and her drive to see to it there is greater oversight and accountability in Columbia,” Davis added. “She is also a no-nonsense candidate who will deliver on her commitments to work on the infrastructure crisis in District 99.”

Mace is the frontrunner for this Berkeley and Charleston county seat, which was represented for more than a decade-and-a-half by former House majority leader Jimmy Merrill. Last December, Merrill was indicted on multiple corruption charges related to #ProbeGate – an ongoing investigation into corruption in state government. Earlier this year he resigned and turned state’s evidence in this multi-jurisdictional probe. News of his resignation is one of many stories related to that investigation that broke exclusively here on this news site.
Merrill’s resignation triggered a special election, with partisan primaries scheduled for November 14 and runoffs (if necessary) scheduled for November 28. The special election itself will be held on January 16, 2018 – with the winner sworn in immediately thereafter.
Mount Pleasant undertaker and town councilman Mark M. Smith, Daniel Island attorney Shawn Pinkston and Daniel Island businessman Jarrod Brooks are challenging Mace for the GOP nomination, while mental health counselor and liberal activist Cindy Boatwright is running unopposed for the Democratic nomination.
As noted previously, this news site is very close to Mace – who in addition to being the first woman to graduate from the Citadel is one of FITSNews’ former co-owners.
