Members of Greenville County council voted unanimously on Tuesday evening to ask for the resignation of embattled sheriff Will Lewis. After meeting behind closed doors for half an hour, council members emerged and unanimously approved a resolution stating that they had “lost confidence” in the Upstate South Carolina sheriff.
Lewis, 42, is at the center of a S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigation and a civil lawsuit stemming from allegations made by Savannah Nabors, a 23-year-old former employee of the Greenville County sheriff’s office.
Nabors claims Lewis drugged and raped her during a March 7 business trip to Charlotte, North Carolina – and that she was forced to give up her job after making it clear she would not sleep with him consensually. Lewis has denied those allegations. According to him, he and Nabors – both of whom are married – engaged in a consensual extramarital affair.
News of both the investigation and the lawsuit broke exclusively on this news site – as did the underlying allegations against Lewis.
This news site was also the first medial outlet in the state to call on Lewis to step down …
Our rationale? Irrespective of what happened between Lewis and Nabors in that Charlotte hotel room, she has presented compelling evidence in her lawsuit of repeated attempts on his part to use public funds to further an extramarital affair between the two of them – and conceal it from the taxpayers.
That alone is sufficient grounds for him to be terminated, in our estimation … and it would appear the members of Greenville County council agree with us.
