Lexington Paper: #NukeGate Indictments Coming

Also, scandal tied to #ProbeGate investigation …

Criminal investigations into South Carolina’s #NukeGate scandal are likely to produce indictments against energy executives.  Not only that, investigations into this spectacularly failed nuclear power project have been materially aided by evidence obtained during #ProbeGate – an ongoing multi-jurisdictional criminal investigation into public corruption at the S.C. State House.

These seismic revelations come courtesy of Jerry Bellune, editor of The Lexington County Chronicle.

Quoting unnamed “insiders,” Bellune reported this week that “federal and state indictments of SCANA executives may be in the works.”

To recap: Publicly traded utility SCANA and its government-owned partner, Santee Cooper, are the focus of state and federal criminal investigations into the failed expansion of the V.C. Summer nuclear power station expansion in Jenkinsville, S.C.

That project has wasted an estimated $9.8 billion on a pair of next generation reactors that are less than half finished.

Bellune also believes a grand jury has already been empaneled in connection with the case, which according to him dovetails with an existing anti-corruption investigation that has been dominating headlines in the state for the past two years.

“Some evidence reportedly came from a raid on the offices of political consultant Richard Quinn, father of state Rep. Rick Quinn of Lexington,” Bellune reported.  “SCANA, the Lexington County-based corporation that owns S.C. Electric & Gas, is a Quinn client.”

Sources close to the #NukeGate investigation told us Bellune’s reporting was premature as both state and federal investigations were in their early stages.
