RE: BABY CAMDEN: MORE BLOOD ON SCDSS HANDS
Dear Editor,
The S.C. Department of Social Services (SCDSS) operates under the “family preservation” doctrine. It used to be states were awarded additional funding for “successful” reunification by the feds.
The problems at SCDSS are over 25 years old … nothing new here. But like everything else follow the money. New money has not reached county offices. If the reunification incentive funds are still available under family preservation, that would explain SOME of the poor case management.
You have to remember case workers see the worst society has to offer on a daily basis. And … they are trained not to judge these “poor, troubled parents” according to their personal standards when making recommendations regarding termination of parental rights or reunification. Family court judges tend to view children as chattel of the parents – much like a cow or pig. Every social system in our state is so screwed up. SCDSS, mental health, education, law enforcement. But our state legislature is surely going to fix us right up with some Senate or House committee bull crap.
Keep writing and exposing.

SIC SEZ …
Anon: Thank you. We will absolutely stay on top of this. I’ve gotten a ton of incoming feedback in the aftermath of the Baby Camden story and look forward to following up on it. Lawmakers are also reading and reacting so that’s positive. We shall see. Eventually they’ve got to figure it out, correct?
