“FAMILY REASONS”

Fiscally liberal South Carolina state representative Mike Ryhal has resigned his legislative office citing “family reasons,” reporter Andy Shain of The (Charleston, S.C.) Post and Courier is reporting.

Ryhal, 59, has represented S.C. House District 56 (map) since being elected to the chamber in 2012.  After beating back a “Republican” primary challenger in 2014, he ran unopposed for this Horry County seat in 2016.

A vice chairman of the influential House labor commerce and industry (LCI) committee, Ryhal was never a friend to taxpayers.  In fact from our perspective, he’s been part of the problem in Columbia, S.C.

During his tenure at the State House, Ryhal consistently voted with liberal “Republican” leaders in approving additional taxingborrowing and spending – recklessly growing a state government that continues to produces abysmal outcomes (economicallyfiscallyeducationally and with regards to infrastructurepublic safety and other core functions of government).

Bottom line?  We’re not at all sad to see him go and hope Horry County voters will see their way to replace him with someone more inclined to protect citizens and taxpayers.

Speaking of …

Partisan primaries for the special election to replace Ryhal will be held on October 24.  If runoffs are necessary in the aftermath of those elections, they would be held on November 7.

The special election itself will be held January 2.
