FOLLOW THE MONEY …
The U.S. Treasury rolled out an upgraded spending transparency website this week, part of an ongoing effort to provide taxpayers with more accurate, detailed and accessible information on the massive amounts of money being blown in Washington, D.C.
“The new site provides taxpayers with the ability to track nearly $4 trillion in government spending from Washington, D.C., directly into their communities and cities,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said. “Furthermore, greater access to data will drive better decision making and strengthen accountability and transparency – qualities central to the administration’s focus on a more innovative and effective government.”
The Treasury’s original spending transparency website – USASpending.gov – has been supplemented with a beta site, Beta.USASpending.gov.
According to reporter S.A. Miller of The Washington Times, the beta site will “run concurrently over the coming months to minimize disruptions to users’ data access and provide time to add enhancements.”
The full migration of data should be complete sometime this summer.
For fiscal year 2016 – which ended last September 30 – the website is currently reporting $3.85 trillion as having been spent nationwide. Approximately 2.6 percent of that total – $77.7 billion – is listed as having been spent in South Carolina.
That’s more than was spent in North Carolina ($63.9 billion) or Georgia ($65.1 billion).
