HOMEOWNERSHIP REMAINS LOW, RENT REMAINS HIGH …
America’s homeownership rate clocked in at 63.6 percent during the first quarter of 2017, according to data released last week by the U.S. Census Bureau. That’s down 0.1 percent from the fourth quarter of last year but up 0.1 percent from the same quarter a year ago.
The median asking price for a vacant home was $176,900 – roughly $25,000 below its 2006-2007 peak.
Homeownership in the United States hit an all-time low of 62.9 percent during the second quarter of 2016. It peaked at 69.2 percent during the second and fourth quarters of 2004.
Where will it go from here? Who knows …

The Census Bureau also released data on the median asking rent for a vacant housing unit – which was flat at $864. That’s just $6 off of last year’s all-time high of $870.
