Republican Congressional candidate Sheri Few today laid out a three-point plan to “protect religious freedom in America and defend individual liberty.”
Few endorsed the First Amendment Defense Act, introduced by Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT), that would stop government agencies from punishing people for religious objections to same-sex marriage as well as rescinding the Johnson Amendment that restricts First Amendment rights of pastors and other clergy-members.
President Trump has endorsed the latter proposal and is expected to sign the FADA if it passes Congress.
Few also endorsed legislation passed by the House of Representatives back in 2005 that would limit judicial power under Article III of the Constitution concerning religious liberty.
“We’ve seen the assaults by big government powers against bakers, photographers and average citizens whose faith teaches that marriage is between one man and one woman,” Few said. “This important package of proposed laws will restore religious liberty in America and allow clergy to speak out openly without threat of IRS reprisals.”
Few and at least six other candidates are running in the South Carolina Fifth Congressional District, which contains all of Cherokee, Chester, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lee, Union and York Counties and portions of Newberry, Spartanburg and Sumter Counties. Few carried the district in her 2014 run for State Superintendent of Education by more than 3,000 votes in a nine-candidate field. Her website is sherifewforcongress.com.
