FOR NOW …
There’s pump pain coming in 2017, but for now prices are holding …
The average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in South Carolina is currently either $2.03 (GasBuddy.com) or $2.04 (AAA). That’s down roughly a dime from when we checked in a month ago – but up nearly fifty cents per gallon from this same time a year ago.
Nationally, a gallon of regular unleaded is currently clocking in at $2.26.
Proposed gas tax hikes have failed in the Palmetto State in each of the last two years (here and here) thanks to the efforts of GOP Senator Tom Davis – who has correctly pointed out that the Palmetto State doesn’t have a revenue problem, it has spending, borrowing and corruption problems.
That’s not going to stop fiscally liberal legislative leaders from trying to raise the tax again this year, though.
Even if South Carolina did require a gas tax hike to fund its infrastructure needs, its dirt poor citizens cannot afford one. As we’ve repeatedly pointed out, motorists in the Palmetto State already pay a higher percentage of their income on fuel than motorists in any other state save Mississippi and West Virginia – a fact politicians and the mainstream media outlets conveniently ignore when they refer to South Carolina as having the “lowest gas tax in America.”
