According to this letter writer, a government-run library in Richland County, S.C. has created a massive “culinary kitchen” in one of its branches – one that has allegedly failed to jump through the same regulatory hoops that commercial kitchens in the area are required to jump through.

According to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC), “an entity is exempt from needing a retail food permit if the prep space is used for ‘cooking schools or classes where registered students are active participants in preparing the food and are the exclusive consumers of the foods prepared.'”
“This library space is classified as a cooking class so is exempt from retail permit,” an agency spokesperson told us.
Now does that mean government should fund libraries? In our humble opinion, no it does not. And does it mean those libraries should operate kitchens? Again, in our opinion no – it does not.
But it’s not illegal to do so, apparently …
