“MULTIPLE PEOPLE DEAD”
A shooting at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood international airport has left at least five people dead and nine others injured. One suspect is in custody, according to Broward County sheriff’s deputies.
The shooting – which began shortly before 1:00 p.m. EST – occurred in the baggage claim area of the airport in Terminal 2, home to Delta Airlines.
The gunman fired until he was out of ammunition, witnesses said, then laid down spread eagle on the floor and waited to be arrested.
Broward County deputies confirmed the shooter was detained “without incident.”
One of the witnesses to the melee? Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer.
“I’m at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport,” Fleischer tweeted. “Shots have been fired. Everyone is running.”
According to U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, the alleged gunman has been identified as Esteban Santiago – a 26-year-old who was allegedly carrying a military identification card at the time of the incident.
