COUGH IT UP, CHOPPERS …
A powerful, politically-connected attorney is soliciting contributions in connection with a “portrait unveiling ceremony” for powerful S.C. Senate president Hugh Leatherman.
In an email obtained by this website, Florence, S.C. attorney Hood Temple asks prospective donors to chip in $1,000 if they wish to appear on an invitation associated with the ceremony – which he is coordinating with Fred Carter, the president of government-run Francis Marion University.
Leatherman’s portrait unveiling is currently scheduled to take place on February 8.
“If you would like to support this celebration, we will need your $1000 contribution by this Friday,” Temple writes in the email, dated January 3.
The email further instructs recipients to “make your checks payable to Hatfield-Temple LLP” and to “mail or deliver” the money to the law firm’s Florence, S.C. office.
Hands-down the most powerful politician in the Palmetto State, Leatherman has ruled over the State Senate since 2014 – and has led its powerful finance committee since 2001.
Over that time he has presided over massive new spending and borrowing – although this explosion of government growth has not translated into improved economic or academic outcomes for South Carolina.
Last spring, the diminutive 85-year-old fiscal liberal handily beat back a GOP primary challenge from Richard Skipper – a local Republican party official who had the support of S.C. governor Nikki Haley.
