HYPOCRITICAL GOVERNMENT-SUBSIDIZED RELIGIOUS PROMOTION …

This website has long believed libraries are not core functions of government – meaning we think they should take a back seat to things like cops and courts and roads and bridges.

Alas this view hasn’t gained much in the way of traction here in our home state of South Carolina …

Down in Charleston, S.C., the county library system is embroiled in a controversy that could cause some to revisit the issue.  We’re referring to an “Overview of Islam” presentation the county’s Johns Island, S.C. branch is hosting late next month.

The event looks to educate attendees on Islam, the prophet Muhammed, the “duties of a Muslim,” the Qur’an and – perhaps most controversially – Sharia Law.

Here are some photos from the library’s promotion of the upcoming event …

Obviously this website has been less than receptive to Sharia Law fear-mongering in the past, blasting politicians who attempted to grasp at this low-hanging fruit.

But that’s not what this is about … this is about a government-funded entity promoting a particular religion.  Which is wrong in our book.

And, apparently, wrong in the library’s book …

“The library will not display literature for political parties or candidates, petitions or other materials advocating a position on a public or social issue or materials supporting or opposing a particular religious conviction,” the Charleston County Public Library stated on its website.

We have nothing against Islam.  Or Muhammed.  Or Muslims.

But imagine for a moment what would happen in this day and age if a government-run library were to offer an event on Christianity – complete with promotional literature asking “Who was Jesus Christ?” “What are the duties of a Christian?” and inviting people to “learn about the Holy Bible?”

Yeah … the radical left would never permit that …
