KEEPING CHEATING COSTLY …
Efforts to reform South Carolina’s alimony laws will be resisted by the state’s leading social conservative organization, which hopes to maintain a government-imposed fee on infidelity as part of its pro-family agenda.
Oran Smith – leader of Palmetto Family – referenced his group’s opposition to alimony reform as part of an end-of-the-year fundraising solicitation.
“Efforts to change alimony laws to reward unfaithful spouses have been defeated time and time again,” Smith wrote. “We will continue to be a part of that effort.”
Unlike child support (ahem), South Carolina law doesn’t set specific standards for alimony calculations. Instead it provides judges with discretionary guidelines to follow in determining payments.
We’ll be honest: We haven’t done a lot of research on this particular issue so we’re not entirely up to speed on its particulars. Generally speaking we are opposed to government intervention in the institution/ termination of marriage (gay, straight or plural) – and we obviously don’t approve of government-imposed moral mandates.
Still, we clearly need to do some digging on this topic … as do state lawmakers.
