TAKING “SORE LOSERDOM” TO THE NEXT LEVEL …
In the latest evidence of the unraveling of the American Republic, liberals irate with the outcome of the 2016 presidential election are being encouraged to refrain from paying taxes to the federal government.
Or at least to threaten non-payment …
According to Mark Weston (writing for Time), everyone who voted for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton last month “should pledge that in the future if a Republican wins the presidency with fewer votes than a Democrat for the third time in our era, we won’t pay taxes to the federal government.”
U.S. president-elect Donald Trump won the electoral college by a compelling majority – however he currently trails Clinton by an estimated 2.6 million votes nationwide (thanks a lot, California).
“We would still pay state, local, sales and property taxes. This is a protest against our 229-year-old system of electoral votes, not against taxation in general,” Weston added.
Weston doesn’t advocate for liberal taxpayers to spend the money they owe (God forbid the economy be stimulated via expanded consumerism). Instead, he wants them to “compute their federal taxes, file a Form 1040 and write a check to a national escrow account, preferably in a well-established Canadian or British bank that is beyond the reach of the U.S. Justice Department.”
Once duly deposited, Weston wants all of this money held until 38 states “have ratified an acceptable Constitutional amendment” doing away with the Electoral College.
Sheesh …
We’ll give credit to the far left for its creative thinking, but this sort of argument – on top of all the hysterical recount demands – is unlikely to engender much (if any) long-term support for the progressive movement. In fact, our guess is it will be extremely counterproductive … sort of like running a candidate who offered absolutely no tax relief to the middle class.
Seriously … at least Trump’s tax plan recognized the value of empowering the consumer economy through middle class tax relief. That’s a far superior approach to pumping more money into a bloated Washington, D.C. bureaucracy – and an infinitely superior approach to hoarding cash as part of some constitutional blackmail scheme.
Which reminds us … the last time we checked, the Electoral College was established to ensure national representation in our elections. Our founding fathers didn’t want a handful of cities dictating who governed the entire country – so they incorporated this important check and balance into our republican form of government.
