ASSUMING HE GETS TO APPOINT …
It’s not even clear yet whether S.C. lieutenant governor Henry McMaster has the authority to name his replacement in the increasingly likely event he ascends to the Governor’s Mansion of South Carolina early next year.
In fact precedent dictates he won’t …
Assuming the right skids get greased, though, McMaster reportedly has a candidate in mind for the position: Current S.C. attorney general Alan Wilson.
Sources close to McMaster tell us he has discussed a possible lieutenant gubernatorial appointment with Wilson – although it’s not immediately clear what came of their conversation.
McMaster is poised to become South Carolina’s 117th governor in the event the current occupant of that office – Nikki Haley – is confirmed as the next United States ambassador to the United Nations (which isn’t necessarily a sure thing).
Prior to Haley’s nomination, McMaster and Wilson were among the GOP candidates considered most likely to run for the governor’s office in 2018.
Now they might wind up running as an incumbent ticket …
Such an appointment (assuming it is constitutionally permissible) would be a boon to Wilson – who has seen his fortunes flag this year thanks to various obstructionist machinations related to an ongoing probe of alleged corruption at the S.C. State House.
Obviously there are a lot of moving parts to this ongoing political two-step, and we will do our best to keep our readers apprised as to the latest developments.
