NIKKI HALEY TO REOPEN THOROUGHFARE TO EASTBOUND TRAFFIC …
S.C. Governor Nikki Haley is discontinuing lane reversals on Interstate 26 – reopening the road to eastbound traffic beginning at around 12:00 p.m. EDT on Friday.
Lane reversals on Interstate 26’s eastbound lanes from Charleston to Columbia, S.C. went into effect at 3:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday as part of the state’s emergency planning for Hurricane Matthew. Haley also shut down schools, parks and government offices across the Midlands region of the state to accommodate what officials had hoped would be a surge of traffic from the Lowcountry.
That surge never materialized, though.
As of this writing, Matthew is moving up the Florida coast – with forecasters projecting its arrival off the coast of the Palmetto State sometime in the early morning hours on Saturday.
Curiously, Haley’s decision to “re-reverse” the lanes comes as her emergency management agency stepped up its pleas for coastal residents to evacuate.
