LOWCOUNTRY EVACUATION UNDERWAY …

One of South Carolina’s most vital transportation arteries is officially a one-way street … at least from Charleston to Columbia, S.C.

Both eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 south of Columbia have been reversed to accommodate westbound traffic as part of S.C. governor Nikki Haley‘s evacuation of the South Carolina Lowcountry ahead of Hurricane Matthew.

Haley’s evacuation order took effect at 3:00 p.m. EDT, and within roughly half an hour traffic had begun moving westbound in all four lanes from the Charleston, S.C. area.

Motorists heading eastbound on Interstate 26 from the South Carolina Upstate should be advised that their lanes will terminate at mile maker 115 – which is located at the intersection of Interstate 26 and Interstate 77 just southwest of Columbia, S.C.

A detour will direct eastbound traffic onto U.S. Route 321.
