ELECTION COMMISSION BEGINS VOTER EDUCATION EFFORTS …
The S.C. Election Commission (SCEC) is encouraging voters in the Palmetto State to get ready for the November elections.
“During the month of September, election officials across the State of South Carolina are focused on encouraging voters to register to vote or update their addresses, educating voters on what they need to bring with them to the polls, and helping voters learn more about what offices and candidates will be on their ballot before they get to the voting booth,” SCEC director Marci Andino said this week via a press release from the agency.
According to Andino there are approximately 3 million registered voters in South Carolina – but 700,000 eligible citizens who have not yet registered. If they wish to vote in the upcoming election, they need to do so prior to October 8.
That deadline is now just two-and-a-half weeks away …
How does the registration process work? Easy … according to Andino, any eligible citizen with a driver’s license or S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) identification card can register to vote online at scVOTES.org. Voters can also download a voter registration by mail application – or register to vote at their county elections office, or at any number of state and local government agencies.
“We want voters to be ready to vote,” Andino said. “Updating your address, knowing where to vote, having the right ID, and reviewing your sample ballot are all keys to having a smooth election day process.”
Andino said election officials are bracing for heavy turnout this year, which means long lines should be expected on Election Day.
And yes … that remains a very sore subject after what happened in Richland County, S.C. four years ago (although those long lines weren’t due to unexpectedly-high turnout).
Anyway, Andino encourages voters to take the following five steps to get ready for the November election …
· Register to Vote – Online voter registration is available at scVOTES.org.
· Check your registration at scVOTES.org – Make sure your registration is active and your address is up to date.
· Update your address – You can update your address using online voter registration.
· Review your sample ballot – Review your sample ballot at scVOTES.org so you are ready to vote once you get to the booth
· Make sure you bring proper ID
