DIFFERENT PARTY, DIFFERENT RESULTS …
A month ago, we reported on a 2016 presidential poll commissioned by the S.C. Democratic Party (SCDP). That survey found GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump leading Hillary Clinton by just two percentage points in South Carolina – a surprising outcome considering the Palmetto State is one of the most consistently “Republican” states in the nation.
This month, a poll released by the S.C. House “Republican” Caucus finds Trump leading Clinton by a much broader margin – nearly sixteen points.
According to the “Republican” poll – conducted by the Atlanta, Georgia-based Trafalgar Group – Trump leads Clinton in South Carolina by a whopping 53-37.6 percent margin. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson drew just 3.4 percent support in the survey, while Green party nominee Jill Stein drew only 0.66 percent support.
The remaining 5.36 percent were either undecided or supporting someone else.
Trump’s lead is most pronounced in the socially conservative Upstate region of South Carolina, where the survey found him pummeling Clinton – 63 percent to 29.1 percent. He’s also running exceptionally strong in the rural Pee Dee region of the state – beating Clinton by a 58.6-36.2 percent margin there.
In the Midlands, the race is much closer. Trump gets 46.3 percent to Clinton’s 43 percent. Meanwhile in the Lowcountry, the race is statistically tied – with Trump drawing 42.7 percent support compared to Clintons 42.5 percent.
Trafalgar’s survey of 1,247 likely voters was conducted between September 6-12 – and has a 2.7 percent margin of error.
