SPEEDY WIDEOUT HOPES TO RETURN IN MID-OCTOBER …
Clemson University wide receiver Hunter Renfrow will miss at least four weeks with a broken bone in his thumb, Tigers’ head coach Dabo Swinney announced this week.
“We thought Hunter was going to be fine, but the MRI on Monday showed a little crack below his thumb,” Swinney said. “He could play with it, but the injury would make it more difficult to hold on to the ball when he tried to tuck it away. He will have surgery to repair it and miss a few weeks. We hope to have him back for the NC State game, but certainly by the Florida State game after the open date.”
Renfrow sustained the injury while catching a touchdown pass during Clemson’s 30-24 win over Troy on Saturday.
A 5-foot-11, 180-pound redshirt sophomore from Myrtle Beach, S.C., Renfrow caught 33 passes for 492 yards and five touchdowns in 2015. His biggest game? The national championship tilt against Alabama, during which the former walk-on hauled in seven receptions for 88 yards and a pair of scores.
Sophomore Ray-Ray McCloud – who caught seven passes for 86 yards against Troy – will move into the starting lineup while Renfrow is sidelined.
Clemson slid from No. 2 to No. 3 in the Amway Coaches’ poll – and from No. 2 to No. 5 in the Associated Press Top 25 – following Saturday’s less-than-impressive showing against Troy.
