HUNDREDS OF NEEDY FAMILIES SET TO RECEIVE SCHOOL SUPPLIES …
For several years, S.C. Rep. Kirkman Finlay and Richland County councilman Damon Jeter have joined forces to provide school supplies to needy children in the Columbia, S.C. area.
Last year, more than 700 children received school supplies thanks to their efforts – nearly double the previous year’s total. That’s excellent news – of course it also highlights the growing need that exists in these communities.
As well as the ongoing failure of (bigger) government to address those needs …
Anyway, this year’s “Back to School Bash” – which is coordinated by the Finlay Scholars charitable organization – could be the biggest event yet. And thanks to the help of corporate sponsors like Staples and AmerisBank, Finlay’s organization says it will be ready for the rush.
In addition to free school supplies, low-income families who attend the event will receive a free hot dog dinner from the Pawleys Front Porch food truck. There will also be a bounce house and music provided by DJ Finesse.
As in previous years, this year’s event will be held in the parking lot of Staples (4464 Devine Street) in downtown Columbia, S.C.
We wrote recently on another worthwhile charitable effort in Columbia – lobbyist Heather Smith‘s “Race for the Case.” Smith’s event – which partners with S.C. Senator Katrina Shealy‘s children’s charity – helps provide suitcases and book bags to foster kids.
Props to all of these individuals for giving of their time and resources to help the less fortunate in their communities.
Our state needs more leaders like this …
