ONE WOUNDED … POLICE SAY SITUATION “UNDER CONTROL”
An as-yet-unidentified male student was wounded during a school shooting in the South Carolina Upstate this morning – prompting officials to place the facility (and several other nearby schools) on lockdown.
The shooting took place at Southside High School – one of fourteen government-run high schools in Greenville County, S.C. According to district spokeswoman Beth Brotherton, the student was shot in the school’s cafeteria shortly before 8:30 a.m. EDT.
“A student at Southside High School is the victim of a gunshot wound,” Brotherton said in a statement.
No word yet on the wounds sustained by the student, who was reportedly “conscious and talking” to first responders while being transferred to a nearby hospital.
Local sheriff’s deputies told WYFF TV 4 (NBC – Greenville/ Spartanburg, S.C.) that the situation was “under control” and that law enforcement was not seeking an active shooter. A police perimeter remained in place around the school as a precautionary measure.
“There is no active search for a suspect,” school officials said in a statement. “There is no threat to the area.”
