… THEIR WAY
|| By FAITH FALISE || Today is Mother’s Day, a day we formally celebrate our mothers and the women who raised us. However, in politics and business every day is Mother’s Day, really. Single moms, working moms, stay-at-home moms, soccer moms, MADD moms. No matter where they stand on the political spectrum – moms of all political persuasions are driving business policy and shaping political agendas.
Moms have become a large and powerful presence in political activism. We run around normal political channels and don’t necessarily follow traditional political models. We have coalesced around every imaginable political issue in ways that dads haven’t been able or willing to do in such large numbers.
Look no further than Chipotle. In response to a petition by the anti-gun group, “Moms Demanding Action,” moms were able to effectively ban guns in Chipotle stores nationwide. Moms mounted an attack on Facebook and Twitter the likes of which the company had never experienced. It worked and the popular restaurant chain gave in.
Similarly, over the past ten years medical marijuana moms in Colorado elbowed their ways into hearings, offices and policy meetings to change U.S. drug laws. Again, it worked. And now Colorado is a safe haven for moms and families seeking refuge from strict and puritan marijuana laws.
It’s no wonder then that professional agitators do their best to stoke the “mommy wars” in an effort to pit various moms against each other. Because when factions disappear so do party lines and inflexible ideologies.
In turn, moms fiercely, protectively and indomitably combine and advocate for systemic change for their children and their families.
So, from the fist pumping “hell yeah” American Mother’s Political Party Mom to the quiet and sublime stay at home mama affecting public policy on the local level, we salute moms. We value their political influence and envy their feminine ability to get things done, their way.
