#ProbeGate: Alan Wilson’s Worst Week Ever

S.C. ATTORNEY GENERAL IMPLODES …  To say S.C. attorney general Alan Wilson had a bad week would be an understatement. He had the absolute worst week we’ve ever seen in Palmetto politics … going from a likely 2018 gubernatorial frontrunner to a man whose political future is badly (and perhaps irreparably)…

S.C. ATTORNEY GENERAL IMPLODES …

To say S.C. attorney general Alan Wilson had a bad week would be an understatement.

He had the absolute worst week we’ve ever seen in Palmetto politics … going from a likely 2018 gubernatorial frontrunner to a man whose political future is badly (and perhaps irreparably) damaged.

Seriously … without overstating things, Wilson could have spontaneously combusted on Easter Sunday and had a better week than the one he wound up having.

On Monday, Wilson was busted attempting to obstruct an investigation into corruption at the S.C. State House (one that appeared to be closing in on some of his closest neo-Confederates).  Angry at getting exposed, Wilson proceeded to fire the prosecutor he had appointed to handle the case – S.C. first circuit solicitor David Pascoe.

And yes, all these Nixonian machinations came from a man who previously recused himself from the investigation due to conflicts which he never disclosed.

On Tuesday, Wilson attempted to appoint a new prosecutor to the case – only to be told “no dice” by the individual he tried to appoint.  That prosecutor proceeded to compound Wilson’s problems by publicly questioning the attorney general’s authority to un-recuse himself from the probe in the first place.

On Wednesday, the implosion reached its crescendo.

That afternoon, Wilson held an angry, ill-advised press conference in which he attempted to smear Pascoe as a “tainted” prosecutor – without offering so much as a shred of evidence to support his allegation.  In the process, he attacked the media, bloggers and other political opponents – coming off as positively unhinged at times.

Thursday came Wilson’s attempt at legislative outreach.  He called S.C. House Speaker Jay Lucas and “majority” leader Bruce Bannister, among others, looking for support for his decisions.

He found none.

“Jay was not impressed,” one GOP legislative leader told us.

Other “Republican” lawmakers echoed that sentiment.

“I think the only people in the General Assembly who support what he’s doing are the ones he’s trying to keep from getting indicted,” one lawmaker told us bluntly.

Wow …

Finally today, Friday, Wilson’s ongoing attempts to politicize the scandal were exposed by The (Charleston, S.C.) Post and Courier – which reported on his efforts to personally sway S.C. Republican Party chairman Matt Moore to get involved.

Moore merely stated that Wilson “asked for patience and prayers in dealing with this difficult situation,” but we’re told he and his allies repeatedly tried to get Moore and other party officials to engage in the fray on his behalf – hoping to turn the issue into a partisan fight (Pascoe is a Democratic prosecutor).

Oh, and in other news – we published this article about how the law in this case is not on Wilson’s side.

So .. did anything go right for Wilson this week?

Well, The Nerve – a website which built its reputation on fighting for “ethics in government” – remained largely silent in response to Wilson’s implosion.  Meanwhile WIS TV 10 (NBC – Columbia, S.C.) – the station where Wilson’s wife used to work as a news reporter – did its best to keep the attorney general’s bad news off of its front page.

That is, until the station got called out …

wis10

Ouch …

Sources tell us Wilson and his allies held a “planning meeting” late this week to determine how they were going to “take the fight to Pascoe” in the coming week.  Perhaps not coincidentally, around midday Friday this website received a salacious news tip regarding Pascoe’s personal life – one seeking to paint the prosecutor in a negative light as a result of an alleged extramarital affair.

We’re investigating the allegation in an effort to determine its veracity … however the timing of the leak reeks of self-preservation on the part of Wilson’s allies (assuming they are indeed behind it).  Furthermore, even if Pascoe did have an extramarital affair – how on earth would that impact his ability to discharge his professional duties?

It wouldn’t … it’s just more smearing.

Frankly, the whole sordid affair strikes us as additional evidence that Alan Wilson, the lawmakers he’s attempting to protect and the political empire that’s struggling to prop him up have found themselves more squarely on the ropes than we originally suspected.

Which is a good thing.

Wilson sold the state on being a crusader against public corruption – but now he’s been completely unmasked as a corrupt politician himself.  In other words we hope he has plenty more “worst weeks ever” until he either resigns or is removed from office.

So, does that mean that Koch heads are the targets of the investigation?

Alan Wilson jumped on the grenade to save the unknown targets of a state grand jury investigation? Wilson seriously tainted the investigation. Purposefully? If we can see those 9 redacted pages from the SLED report, Pascoe gets my vote.

I’ve been watching the local news too. WIS has buried the story on the web and had done very little on the evening news. WLTX has been aggressive. They’ve talked with legal eagles who called Wilson out for obstructing Justice. WLTX also had an interview with Wilson the day he imploded. Despite having Ben Hoover, WOLO has done very little. It just amazes me how different the same story is covered.

An attorney has put his career on the line and made a filing with the Surpreme Court so that he can release his client, the DC Madam, client files that most likely will implicate Ted Cruz as a subscriber to her services(8 mins in):

Twitter is not SnapChat. where things disappear perminately. She is not a public official using a public account. People have harassed her and PhotoShopped her Instagram photo. Wouldn’t you advise your daughter to do the same?

The attorney has done no such thing. He has never said the Cruz’s numbers were on the records. He instead coordinated with anonymous to release records that only have TX for identified the calls. The voters recognize coordination and timing among that lawyer, anonymous and Trump Henchmen.

Philanderin' Ted April 2, 2016 at 5:23 pm

“The attorney has done no such thing. ”

Are you high? He did EVERYTHING I posted, nothing more, nothing less.

“He has never said the CCruz’s numbers were on the records.”

Did I ever say that? No. Stop putting words in my mouth. He is under court order and can not currently divulge the phone records, but has simply said they will have an impact on the Presidential race and the press has put 2 and 2 together.

“Wouldn’t you advise your daughter to do the same?”

No, I wouldn’t, unless my daughter was dumb enough to sleep with a married man.

If she hadn’t, there’s no reason to spend the time & energy to go back and delete over 900 tweets, which is a huge undertaking and serves no purpose.

The Feds are NOT coming to town and straighten this mess up. Jean Toal – one of the corrupt politicians on the Pascoe list and one of the main ones Wilson is trying to protect – has made sure Little Bill Nettles has protected her on the Federal level. So all she had to do was call Jahue Moore who got Alan Wilson to stop this investigation on the state level.

In the world of faceless and irresponsible comments designed to disparage and deceive, everyone’s mind was made up before this affair even began. Jesus was a sailor

When he walked upon the water

And he spent a long time watching

From his lonely wooden tower

And when he knew for certain

Only drowning men could see him

He said “All men will be sailors then

Until the sea shall free them”

But he himself was broken

Long before the sky would open

Forsaken, almost human

He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone …

Jon April 4, 2016 at 10:21 am

Jesus did not libel and defame people anonymously.

Not surprised that those that do would compare themselves to Jesus and the disciples. Having a God complex makes it easier to trash others.

You folks needs a bit of introspection. Certainly, you would not want to be trashed, nor would you want your wife or child trashed.

It’s the Golden Rule. But that doesn’t work with arrogant shits.

A fascinating element of all this, to me, is the great lengths that Richard (D**k) Harpootlian went to in order to get a run-off between Preston Brittain and Gloria Bronell Tinubu for the SC7 GOP nomination for the congressional seat. How would he ever imagine that this would not have blown up in their faces very quickly, had he succeeded in that?

These Democrats are just as filled with hubris as their counterparts in the GOP. Here in MB it is an incestuous little group, too. I’ve always believed that the power of what we call the “Myrtle Beach Mafia” extended to powerful Dems at the state level – but in the past I did not believe that Harpootlian was one of them. Now I’m convinced that he is. This is more than just another felony DUI case for him. It’s important to find out what skin he might have in the gang beyond just the attorney-client relationship.

He had a prior on something like that, right, at least a prior charge? Did you guys assist in any way with Hembree and others on the corrupt legal side of the “Myrtle Beach Mafia” letting that guy slide for that to this very day?

And hey, Mike Wooten gonna get more high-profile again? Now THERE’S somebody you’ve kept in the background pretty much for a while, huh, sort of like Kelly, Greene, Dyer, et al? Some people I know remember how ol’ Mike made a big show of going around asking for donations for the infamous political pay-offs at various businesses in MB, in order to make it look like all the money was not coming from Brittain, then never really followed up coz it was just a show. Murrells Inlet, SC#66 Jul 5, 2012

Is **** Harpootlian still Hilton’s attorney?

How many on this thread are aware of the fact that he is head of the Democratic Party in South Carolina?

Has it been determined exactly which Brittain was having the party he was leaving the night of the felony DUI?

Was it the home of Tommy Brittain or his cousin, the late David Brittain?

Will, your coverage over the last week or so of this AG’s obstructionist efforts (in my view) has been exemplary as has John Moncks of The State Newspaper. Now hopefully the SC Supreme Court will agree that Pascoe and SLED should continue and complete their investigation and prosecution with a state grand jury. This is apparently another SC Lost Trust debacle. THANK YOU FITSNEWS!!!

I never trusted the results of the 2010 elections. Maybe it’s all been a sham since 2008.

WLTX has run numerous on air stories about Alan Wilson’s attempt to block this corruption investigation. WIS only had a few short stories. WLTX is leading the charge in the Columbia area on honest TV investigation reporting, and this is just another example of it.

Prayers? I can just hear old Two Bars now:
“Dear Baby Jesus:
I know you are all powerful except for when you let that Muslim Obama guy get to be the President. But your ways are mysterious, and that’s OK cause it helped Daddy to get famous. Please please oh please pretty please help me get rid of this Pascoe guy. He is fixin’ to ruin it for everybody. If you do, I will start going back to Church. I need to anyway if I’m going to be the next governor.
Your friend,
Alan
