BUT DOES SHE DESERVE IT?
A totally unnecessary gasoline tax hike would have been the law of the land in South Carolina a year ago were it not for the efforts of S.C. Senator Tom Davis – who staged an impassioned filibuster against the legislation last spring.
This year Davis did it again … and with a capable assist from S.C. Senator Harvey Peeler, he has not only killed the gas tax but dealt a major blow to the power of liberal S.C. Senate leader Hugh Leatherman.
The game has changed in Palmetto politics, people …
Bizarrely, though, Democratic leaders in the S.C. General Assembly are crediting governor Nikki Haley with the defeat of the tax hike.
Really?
Haley has taken so many positions on the gas tax it’s hard to know what she thinks about it … and her administration sent all sorts of mixed signals on the issue in the aftermath of the so-called “1,000-year flood” last October.
Anyway …
None of that stopped S.C. House minority leader Todd Rutherford from giving Haley all the credit for the tax hike’s demise this year.
“I’d like to congratulate Governor Haley on successfully scaring enough Republican Senators into voting for a bill that looks good but does nothing instead of a real, sustainable funding plan for our roads,” Rutherford said. “The recent news leaks by the governor’s office about her new political action committee and the Senators she planned to target this election year was a shrewd political tactic to make Republican Senators think twice before showing a little political courage.”
Interesting …
After running as a Tea Partier in 2010, Haley has spent the last five-plus years governing like a Democrat – with predictable results (here and here). We’d think Rutherford would appreciate her consistent support of big government, but apparently not …

The only way anyone would believe Haley sent a mixed message after the “so called” “1000 year flood”,would be if they trusted what is published in Fitsnews.
Incidentally, Haley never said “1000 year flood”. I listened to her press conference and you can find it online. I believe the words she used was 1000 year rain event. That description was confirmed by a FEMA official.
You need a paper towel to rub some of that brown off your nose????
It’s not brown, it’s clearish.
$9.7 million is what Spartanburg County CTC got to pave state roads in the county. That covers about 33 miles of state roads. Spartanburg County has over 1200 miles of state roads on top of the 1800 miles of county owned roads. Do the math folks. Do you really think that this $400 million will actually make our roads better in 5 years? There are 45 other counties in this state. $400 million is not guaranteed every year. Just look at the aid to local government fund that has been shortchanged for years by the legislature. This should be called the patch act because it is far short of what is actually needed. Do the math.
But, But, But…..Spartanburg County Council voted in the $25/vehicle road “fee” for county roads around 14 years ago!!!!
Don’t you know that Spartanburg County has the best maintained and litter free county roads in the entire nation because of the $25/vehicle road “fee”?????
Yes they did and it goes to maintain the 1800 miles of Spartanburg County owned roads. Which, by the way are in quite better shape than the state roads in Spartanburg County. If you have got a litter problem on a road – report it to Environmental Enforcement so they can add the road to the litter pick up crews lists of roads to do.
The only reason Leatherman is powerful is because Republican Senators give him the power. Hats off to Davis for showing fortitude.
Republican Senators unite, overthrow Leatherman.
so haley is a democrat and trump is a republican, is it just me or has the radical right gone bat shit crazy?
Jesus ordained Trump to save America.Satan used Haley to deceive America.

I love taxes, but I don’t like Democrats because blacks vote for them. Really conflicted here!
You’re from Ohio. You were BORN conflicted.
Yeah, but so is Robin Meade!
Now I’m torn.
Naw Pogo is a member in good standing of the elite South Carolina intelligencia!!!!
Who knows where the hell you’re from.Didn’t you say you hung out with Eric Rudolph in a sleazy Laurinburg,NC motel room in your ‘drifter’ days before mommy let ya move in?
LMAO!!!
At least this version of him is more honest.
There is already a line item in the budget for Roads Maintenance. Paving and maintaining roads uses the same asphalt it did decades ago which is still basically the same cost. We haven’t switched over to paving roads with diamonds and gold. So where did the money go?
actually asphalt prices have fallen through the floor, it their was ever a time to fix our roads, it would be now.
