BRYAN STIRLING SENT TO BABYSIT TROUBLED AGENCY
S.C. governor Nikki Haley has sent her former chief of staff and the current director of the S.C. Department of Corrections (SCDC) to deal with the mushrooming scandal at her Department of Juvenile Justice (SCDJJ).
Bryan Stirling paid a visit to SCDJJ last week in the aftermath of a late February riot at the agency’s Broad River Road facility in northwest Columbia, S.C. That melee resulted in damage to numerous buildings and vehicles, injuries to multiple SCDJJ inmates and guards, an alleged sexual assault and an escape no one even noticed.
It’s also prompted at least one legislative investigation.

Anyway, Stirling’s selection as Haley’s point person on this scandal is curious seeing as his agency has been dealing with many of the same problems. Exactly what does Haley expect this political appointee to do here?

As we noted in our latest report, SCDJJ’s problems appear to run very deep – with multiple sources blaming administrators for adopting policies that coddle violent juveniles and encourage their bad behavior. Sources tell us things have been going downhill for several years, with the latest violence finally drawing attention to the problem.

Well, in fairness to him if someone allowed us to provide corporations with tax breaks and even taxpayer funded incentives, either of us could probably do as well if not better than Bobby Hitt.

Cheryl Stanton is the biggest joke in the cabinet. DOL audits have shown huge non-compliance issues, turnover of her top staff is staggering, both she personally and her agency is being sued, and she refuses to operate within DOL a regulations. The SCDEW job bank is impossible for private businesses to use. They “bank” less than 1% of available jobs, and more than half of these are state government jobs. She is a grumpy autocrate who has no knowledge of DOL law. Her predicessor, “Da General” was duffless, Stanton is evil.
Boy, are you behind. The agency was $977,720,274 in debt when Haley took office and now has a surplus of $307,378,233 in the emergency trust fund. South Carolina is still rated insolvent, based on our highest 3 year benefit cost rate, but 16 states are worse off and only 18 states are at least minimally solvent. Few were worse off when Haley took office. Before 2015, the state’s solvency level was zero. Now it is 0.37. Soon it will 0.70, which represents minimum solvency.
At peak recession, over 5% of the workforce was on unemployment. Now only 1% are. Unemployment was over 10%, now it is 5.5%.
Unemployment insurance has gone down. Every week since Haley has been in office the number of unemployment insurance recipients has been down over the previous year except two the two weeks after the flood.

Nikki is in crisis mode. Her reaction to everything is to just , well, “take action – ANY action.” Then she forgets about the entire situation. She sleeps well….. waiting for that phone call from Marco.

Anyone who knows Stirling knows that he’s as a fine public servant as exists in state government. He’s done an excellent job at DOC. Only a fool would expect DOC to ever run without the occasional problem, or even “crises.” It is, after all, populated by bad people, some worse than you can imagine. DJJ has been a nightmare forever. Judge Byers did good work there, but it will always be a nightmare to some degree. If the current administration there isn’t doing as well as it could, there’s no one better than Stirling to help improve the way it’s run.
Same old, same old. The politician rewards/paybacks by giving those who helped them rise positions in their Administration. Unfortunately, little care is taken in determining whether they are actually capable. Rs and Ds both do this and then sling arrows at each other whenever possible. The everyday taxpayer is the one that gets crapped on.
When Rubio loses Florida, Nikki will return to fix everything and it will be a great day in SC once again. If he wins, most unlikely, he will chose Jeb.
One gets the feeling that there is something so basically wrong with the SCDJJ, that a little dose of common sense would be a good start to correcting the problem.
Trying to treat these little incarcerated turds like products of an unfair society and it is SCDJJ ‘s job to correct the problem. SCDJJ’S role is to lock these people up, and in the process, let them know, YOU better get your life together or you will be back here.
Sounds like the crazy people are running the asylum.
SCDJJ is not a institution to to deal with social and economic problems, their job is to provide a place where these inmates can serve time, as a punishment, for a crime against society. These officers are not an group of Doctor Phil’s.
