MITT ROMNEY REAPPEARS …

rick manning|| By RICK MANNING || Mitt Romney is the candidate who was sold as the best chance to win against President Obama in 2012, and then proceeded to stumble so badly that his campaign couldn’t even provide election volunteers with working get-out-the-vote software.  It is no surprise that the GOP establishment’s choice in 2012 is upset that primary voters aren’t toeing the line after the debacles of eight and four years ago.

In fact, Romney’s candidacy in 2012 mirrors the Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) problem of 2016.  Romney never was able to speak effectively about the most potent issue against the president, ObamaCare, because as governor of Massachusetts, he helped orchestrate a state version of the hated law.  Similarly, Rubio’s “pro-amnesty in Spanish and anti-amnesty in English” approach combined with his Gang of Eight amnesty bill leadership irrevocably separates him from the vast majority of voters on the issue that symbolizes the divide between the Beltway and outside-the-Beltway Republicans.

Romney’s message from the #neverTrump GOP consultant movement used language that directly mirrored Rubio’s in assailing Trump, making it clear that his vote-for-anyone-other-than-Trump statement was really a primal scream attempting to save Rubio’s flagging home-state fortunes in winner-take-all Florida.

If Romney had wanted to run for president, he should have put his name on the ballot, but to provide Democrats general-election fodder against one of the two GOP presidential aspirants with a chance to win is self-defeating.  What’s more, if Romney truly wanted to stop Donald Trump, he should have joined Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and grudgingly conceded that only Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) can beat him with this front-loaded primary system, and privately called Rubio telling him to stop delivering delegates to Trump and to get out of the race.

Instead, providing additional evidence that the GOP consultant class still doesn’t get it, the Romney diatribe against Trump will only serve to lock in Trump voters and reinforce the “us versus them” perception that separates the average GOP voter from the political party bosses in D.C. who despise them.

The truth is that the more the establishment attacks Trump, the more Trump’s vote amongst the flyover conservative base expands, and the fact that the two front-runners are not part of the cool clique at the Capitol Hill Club clearly scares the heck out of them …

So Colonel, what are your thoughts about the current race? Not being a smarty ass, seriously?

I’ll give you mine. I think the GOP has hit a serious wall here. To allow Trump to be the nominee in my mind is a disaster. Not that he’ll lose – that I think would be a near certainty. But to lose in 2016 with his vitrole would simply tarnish the GOP for a generation. I saw him in Warren MI today with a group of followers and if we’d just hung some Red banners with swatikas it would be like old times. And they were chatting “build the wall, build the wall.” If I’d had a bong and Pink Floyd on I probably would have freaked out. And then he shouts out “And who’s going to pay for it.” And the crowd in a frenzy shouts back “Mexico.” It was as if he had 3,000 people chanting Death to Mexico. That’s scary.

So he has to be taken out. But not just him. It’s this so called “base” we hear about. You’re a Republican, you’re normal. Where are all the others like you? What I’m getting at here is that the party has condensed down to some “base” that is irrational, hate driven and just plain nuts. So I think Mitt’s first salvo was correct. It’s time for the GOP to say – “look, take your Trump and leave.” These aren’t Republicans. These are left over rabble from the Reagan years, who joined the GOP because they thought Ronald Reagan was great, but never understood what the real underlying principals of being a Republican are. They are no different, except in volume, of the far left wackos my party was saddled with in 1987, and 1988, and 1990. It took Clinton facing off with Jesse Jackson to say “No, you don’t own this. You don’t run this. Leave if you want, but you are not the Party.”

So I think at this point the Party leaders, that’s Mitt, that’s Colin Powell, that’s W, that’s McCain, Flake, McConnell, Ryan – they need to stand up in unison and say, “Enough.” If you have to drag Nancy Reagan out in a wheelchair – do it. Will it cost the election in 2016? That’s already gone. You have within the GOP a set of strong, modern, 21st century voices, that can rebuild it. Rubio (not may all time favorite), Paul Ryan, Nikki Haley, Jindhal, and some wiser folks like Kasich. Who can attract younger voters. Who can attract millenials, African Americans, Hispanics, and a true cross cut of America. But this angry white mob – they’ve got to go. And if I have to hear about Trump’s little member one more time…………

I don’t think anybody is thinking, “death to Mexico”, Rocky. We ARE though, tired of being shat upon by this corrupt (maybe as badly or worse than us, if that’s possible) third-world nation that sends its failures (its own citizens who it has failed for decades, maybe centuries) to us, for us to feed, care for medically, and incarcerate if their behavior warrants it. Everybody wants to whine about how “evil” our immigration policies are towards Mexico, but when you compare how theirs are for someone from the US who might want to move there, ours are quite benevolent.

Trump is right on so many things. We cannot continue to play Santa Claus to the world, getting nothing in return, and expect to stand or even survive.

Rocky Verdad March 4, 2016 at 12:35 pm

But see, I think that over simplifies it. Think about what it takes to leave your home country, to go to another, undocumented, in order to build a life for you and your family. That’s not a trait I would associate with lazy worthless people.

Reply
CorruptionInColumbia March 4, 2016 at 1:11 pm

The people who come here, probably for the most part, are incredibly hard-working.

The problem which has gotten seriously out of hand, is that because in part, of their industriousness, as well as their background of extreme hardship, they are willing to severely undercut each-other and American citizens, often working for half or less of our minimum wage. A friend in the construction industry who used to make good money tells me the glut of workers from South of our border has destroyed wages, if you can even find a job. Yeah, that’s just peachy-king if you’re a greedy contractor, not so much for a worker. There were reasons for our strict border policies and this was one of them. Again, in a given country, the welfare of its citizens should be first and we’ve drifted far from that.

Crime has become a big problem. About ten years or more ago, I had no problem with the visitors from another country who I used to encounter from time to time. I actually admired their determination and fortitude in seeking a better life for themselves and their families, at first. Then, over time, I began to notice something. Rather than trying to remain inconspicuous and hiding in the background, our visitors began causing more and more problems on the job for me and my co-workers.

Automobile accidents because of a complete absence of driving skills, DUI (an apparent culturally accepted behavior), lack of insurance, licenses, registrations, and more made you really dread a traffic-related encounter with these guys who spoke little or no Ingles.

Then there was thievery. When they were trying to remain in the background, I thought these guys were among the most honest in the world. Rarely did you have a problem with thievery. Once they began to realize they had little or no reason to fear deportation, their faces were quite common to encounter on shoplifting calls at local stores. In fact, it got to the point that you encountered their brown faces more than black and white faces on such calls in some parts of town, when on shoplifting calls.

By this time, it was becoming apparent that our visitors were, as some had been saying, a detrimental influence. When you think about it, if they disrespect our laws so much as to violate them by coming here in defiance of them, I guess violation of our laws against unsafe driving, theft, rape, robbery, and occasionally even murder, aren’t a huge stretch.

It is no longer amusing. ER’s are full of our uninvited visitors. The law says the ER must treat people who seek help, but makes no provision for extracting payment. I was born here, but I have to pay higher to cover their unwillingness to pay if I go to the hospital or ER, something I have managed to avoid.

Jails and courtrooms are being strained by their presence as are schools.

This is not an indictment of all Hispanics, just the ones coming here in droves, who defy our laws. Puerto Rican, no problem. You were born an American Citizen, same as me. Mexican immigrant with green card or naturalized citizen, no problem. You did things right. Welcome to the looney bin! Other citizen or invitee from Latin countries, no problem. Thanks for doing it the right way and for your patience with our screening process!

Rocky Verdad March 4, 2016 at 5:05 pm

So you’ve personally been hit by uninsured illegals, who then stole your wallet, assaulted you, raped you, then when the ambulance came, you got the ER and had to wait because 45 wetbacks were giving birth, and when you were released they increased your bill by $5000 to cover their costs?

CorruptionInColumbia March 4, 2016 at 7:30 pm

Not me personally, but that is completely beside the point. I was one of the guys who was sent to make the reports when those things happened.

The point is, they don’t belong here and it is something much more than “xenophobia” that is causing the problems. We had immigration laws in place for a reason. Those laws have been circumvented by Bush and 0bama, as they will be by Hillary, Ted, or Marco, should any of them win.

I’m sorry for anyone who has to be deported because they chose to ignore our laws and come here, but the party is about over. The punch bowl is almost empty and the hors d’oeuvres are about gone. It’s been a nice run but time is drawing close to having to go home. The gracious host is ready to have the use of their house back.

Rocky Verdad March 4, 2016 at 5:06 pm

This is not an indictment of all Hispanics, just the ones coming here in droves, who defy our laws. Puerto Rican, no problem.

Have you ever flown along the border from Houston, over El Paso, then along NM and Arizona and SCal? There are not huge waves of illegals.

CorruptionInColumbia March 4, 2016 at 7:20 pm

Probably not, anymore. Most of ’em are here, now.

Like Hillary on the Left, they have been bought and paid for by Special Interests. It is time to voice our disgust at the voting booth as is our right in a democratic Republic. Unlike the Dems, we won’t be silenced by Wasserman-Schultz telling us to sit down and shut up, nothing to see here, it’s Hillary’s turn.
Will Trump disappoint at times? No doubt. But Trump is approaching problems from a different slant, has an eagerness to truly problem solve, and he has the self-interest to see things through to a successful completion.

If millions of these invaders, who undercut wages and increasingly ARE taking jobs that American citizens would have are deported, how can you not see the benefit to citizens who would get those jobs?

America has been “taking it up the ass” from WTO and like for years. This is why SC no longer has a textile industry and much of USA’s manufacturing industry has died, or maybe just reincarnated overseas.

NAFTA was another stake in the heart of our manufacturing industries, courtesy of the Bushes and Clintons, and their NWO handlers which some say do not exist.

Rocky Verdad March 4, 2016 at 4:32 pm

You’re just not going to get me to agree. Competing with Juan on who runs the weed eater just doesn’t seem like a viable long term vision for the American worker.

Competing with Juan on who runs the weed eater just doesn’t seem like a viable long term vision for the American worker.

It’s not.
The *American worker* shouldn’t have to compete with *Juan*.
That’s why Trump wants to deport *Juan.*

CorruptionInColumbia March 4, 2016 at 4:56 pm

It’s not “just” Juan, who runs the weedeater. It’s drywall, painting, roofing, even plumbing, and more.

A few months ago, a friend who did plumbing and electrical noted that those two vocations HAD been relatively safe due to licensing requirements that the illegals could not meet, due to their undocumented status. As time has moved on, he noted, contractors have begun to cheat on plumbing and were beginning to move in that direction with electrical work.

This is a serious and growing problem, whether anyone wishes to admit it or not.

Race for the bottom March 4, 2016 at 5:05 pm

But you’re OK with Juan doing it…until Juan is replaced by a robot. Unless you pay a desperate Juan even more depressed wages making him more competitive with an expensive robot, which further depresses US citizen wages. In the meantime our borders remain open. Welfare State and Open Borders = Collapse

Rocky Verdad March 4, 2016 at 4:58 pm

So to be fair, about NAFTA another stake in the heart –

So: Manufacturing, value added (current US$)

1997 – 1.34 trillion dollars
2000 – 1.50 trillion dollars
2004 – 1.56 trillion dollars
2010 – 1.75 trillion dollars
2013 – 1.95 trillion dollars

Manufacturing is alive and well in the United States. It’s high tech, capital intensive requiring highly skilled labor. The old textile plants are gone because they were low tech, labor intensive. It’s simple laws of comparative advantage. Industry changes, things change. My great grandparents used a horse. My grandparents had Fairlawn. I drive a fuel-injected engine.

Cars made in Mexico include a large percentage of components made in the USA. Also made in Europe, and Japan. What’s more valuable, the 500 jobs making the components, in a high-wage facility, or the 2 guys with a screw driver and spray can.

There is a more important entity here than either party. It is the political establishment as a whole. Both the (D) and (R) are corrupted. The desire for power is more important than who is in power. Trump is not owned by anyone. That fact alone scares the crap out of the elites. Which is enough to make me support him. We the people are fed up with this. Flipping and Flopping Again- (I bet will be no wall or mass deportations either)

Donald Trump on Friday reversed his position on the use of torture during interrogation, just hours after saying he supports the use of torture and would order the military to carry it out.

Trump told the Wall Street Journal that he would “use every legal power that I have to stop these terrorist enemies. I do, however, understand that the United States is bound by laws and treaties.”

“I will not order our military or other officials to violate those laws and will seek their advice on such matters,” Trump said in a statement.

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/432010/trump-university-scam

Trump never ran the University. It wasn’t even a university. It offered no degrees or diplomas. It had no courses or grading. It was merely a series of seminars that he charge $35,000 for. All of the University employees were employed in marketing and sales of the seminars. Trump and the University employees hired an outside firm that specializes in motovational speeches to prepare all the seminars content and materials.

Trump personally had no role at the university other than marketing it to prospective students. But, that same marketing and Trump’s own words said that he would be actively involved with the program and the students. All the students got was a picture with a cut out of Trump.

Trump University gave free introductory seminars that focused solely on encouraging the purchase more seminars that would reveal the “hidden secrets of real estate”.

Lawsuits by former students are in the courts of two states already. Trump will have to testify during the general election.

Trump is using the same marketing techniques he used at Trump University that he is using in the presidential campaign. Don’t be a DUPE!!!

You contradicted yourself in there. You said “Trump is making the same promises today that he made to the ‘students’ of Trump’s University” but then you go on to accurately say that “Trump never ran the University” and “Trump personally had no role at the university other than marketing it to prospective students”, both of which undercut your first point that Trump supporters are dupes because supposedly he’ll do the same thing as president as far as implementing policies. He’s only going to “market” them and supposedly not be involved. That doesn’t make any sense. Leave the Trump University nonsense alone. It was a bad idea and a failed business venture, but it’s hardly evidence that Trump is not qualified to be president or somehow less qualified than the other three. We are not being taken advantage of by other countries in trade. A trade war hurts everyone. We have lost manufacturing jobs because of automation. Sending auto parts to Mexico to be assembled makes America more competitive.

Mexico’s main advantage over the US is 5hat they have freer trade with Asia and Europe than the US. Any attempt to deport 11 millions Mexicans will hurt the US economy and will export people that we have spent a fortune educating for Latin America to reap the benefits. Retail businesses will close down. Construction costs will skyrocket. The American foreman will not find American replacements for lost workers. Instead he will lose his job too.

Trade deficits are not bad. It only means that we are better at creating wealth, so we export some for the purchase of things that we don’t want to waste our resources and labor producing. South Carolina is better off with BMW, Volvo, Boeing, Michelin, and GE, than with sewing plants and apparels.

From what I’ve listened to (the flips flops and double talking included) all of them but Cruz. Donald let that slip last night with his being flexible and a negotiator on that issue and others.

Bible Thumper March 4, 2016 at 5:04 pm

This is copied from Rubio’s website. The web page is called “How Marco Will Start Securing Our Border on Day One”
https://marcorubio.com/issues-2/marco-rubio-immigration-plan-border-security-legal/

First, those here illegally must come forward and be registered. If they have committed serious crimes or have not been here long enough, they will have to leave. With the new E-Verify system in place, they are going to find it difficult to find a job in any case.

Second, those who qualify would be allowed to apply for a temporary nonimmigrant visa. To obtain it they will have to pay an application fee and a fine, undergo a background check and learn English. Once they receive this work permit, they would be allowed to work legally and travel. To keep it, they will have to pay taxes. They would not qualify for government programs like Obamacare, welfare or food stamps. And if they commit a crime while in this status, they would lose their permit.

Third and finally, those who qualify for a nonimmigrant visa will have to remain in this status for at least a decade. After that, they would be allowed to apply for permanent residency if they so choose. Many who qualify for this status will choose to remain in it indefinitely. But those who choose to seek permanent residency would have to do it the way anyone else would, not through any special pathway.

Hank March 4, 2016 at 5:10 pm

So Rubio is for amnesty and a path to citizenship. Why doesn’t he just come out and say that. Why does he keep obfuscating and lying on that issue?

Bible Thumper March 4, 2016 at 5:12 pm

If you have to pay a fine, it is not amnesty.

James March 4, 2016 at 5:32 pm

Ok, I think you have cleared up a lot of my questions. I think a fine not making it amnesty is a joke. but at least you have made it clear that Rubio is for keeping illegals in the country, slapping them on the wrist, and giving them a path to citizenship. I don’t understand how establishment types cannot understand that position is not acceptable to the people who have been supporting Trump, but apparently they don’t.

So again I am back to my original question. How do you establishment types not understand that you are offering no viable alternative to Trump? You are marginalizing and ignoring all of those people who disagree with you on illegal immigration. They are angry and your response is don’t worry be happy. I think they are justified in crucifying you.

Bible Thumper March 4, 2016 at 5:39 pm

There is no such thing as an establishment type except from the same type of perspective of a bigot that thinks all blacks look alike.

The folly is that Trump supporters think that it would be better for them if 11 million people left the country. My position is that the situation would be much worse.

James March 4, 2016 at 6:21 pm

Oh there is an establishment type. Its the type who keeps pushing the same old policy, the same old positions, the same old rhetoric, and ignoring the fact a huge percentage of the people they relying on for support are in total disagreement with them.

The Republican establishment has always wanted amnesty and a path to citizenship. Because their donors benefit from cheap labor and are paying them to push for that. Because of that a large percentage of their base is no revolt.

James March 4, 2016 at 6:22 pm

is now in revolt

Nat March 4, 2016 at 6:33 pm

If the illegals become legal as in being able to live and work here, why would they still be cheap labor?

James March 4, 2016 at 7:00 pm

I think because there are so many who are uneducated and unskilled that they would depress wages. But that is I am sure not the problem most Trump supporters would identify as the biggest problem. The real issue here is you are talking about 25 to 30 million new hispanic citizens over the next 10 to 15 years. Plus you will encourage the illegal immigration of millions more, just like Reagan’s amnesty did. How will those new voters view immigration. How will that affect the future of the country and politics of this country?

Nat March 4, 2016 at 7:07 pm

Oh, so this is really a bigot issue. No solution for that.

The real issue here is you are talking about 25 to 30 million new hispanic citizens over the next 10 to 15 years.

James March 4, 2016 at 7:12 pm

I don’t see that as a bigot issue. 25 to 30 million new French citizens would have an impact on the politics of the country as well. But we have immigration laws for a number of reasons. We do discriminate on who can come to this country. I think we need to take that into consideration. If you are an open border’s guy, then you are correct. There is no issue. If you are not an open borders guy, then you have to know that former illegal aliens are going to be far more open to more immigration from their native country. They are going to want to bring their families. We cannot ignore that completely.

Do you believe we should have open borders for work and citizenship purposes?

Nat March 4, 2016 at 7:26 pm

No, the border needs to be secured. The farmers and other ag industry do need some type of visa laws to help with their seasonal labor needs. Americans really are not going to pick fruit. There are appx 55 million Hispanics in the US and that population will continue to grow just by having babies. I guess you believe half of that population is illegal?

Nat March 4, 2016 at 6:01 pm

Does this sound like someone who is standing firmly by his stance on illegal immigration?

“I will say though, in terms of immigration and almost anything else, there always has to be some, you know, tug and pull and deal,” Trump said.

James March 4, 2016 at 6:08 pm

What is your point? If you don’t believe him, then don’t. But you have to pick somebody. You have just been told that Rubio wants what I would call amnesty and a path to citizenship. Kasich wants some form of amnesty but has not said anything about a path to citizenship.

Trump says no amnesty, no path to citizenship. Cruz says no amnesty, not path to citizenship. So if that is what you want, you have to pick one of them. I think Cruz is wholly unacceptable to a lot of people who think his is a religious nut. That leaves only one alternative.

Nat March 4, 2016 at 6:15 pm

Then vote for him. I don’t believe him and I also don’t believe anyone is going to deport 11 million people. So I’m not basing my vote on that, only how they plan to solve the current problem. Securing the border- including the misuse of overstaying visas, deporting the criminals and bringing the others out of the shadows and legally contributing to the economy and society.

Also known as expanding the Productivty Frontier Curve – allowing us to increase out standard of living. But hey, let’s not degernate to master’s level economics.

Bible Thumper March 4, 2016 at 5:07 pm

When they increase their standard of living they will purchase more or our exports.

James P. March 4, 2016 at 3:53 pm

Building an actual border, repealing Obamacare, getting rid of the DOE, rebuilding the VA, utilizing existing leverages with China and Mexico, etc. will “be a disaster for this country”???

Rocky Verdad March 4, 2016 at 5:00 pm

Building a border wall, repealing OCare, getting rid of DOE, withdrawal from NAFTA and WTO – are things that I can assure you – will never, ever happen.

James P. March 4, 2016 at 3:53 pm

Yeah, well the establishment has fooled us far more than once.

The “establishment” does not exist, at least how the public perceives it.
When people are angry about things they don’t understand, they willing to accept simple explainations. The so called establishment is as divided as the American people are. They are just like us.

People give the “establishment” the same fanciful powers and influence that they imagine that the “The Illuminati”, The Council on Foreign Relation, The Trilateral Commission and the Bilderberg Conference supposedly have. Or maybe you think the “Establishment” controls everything like the Jewish

Tom March 4, 2016 at 5:38 pm

There most certainly is an establishment. It is a combination of party leaders, entrenched politicians, billionaire donors, and lobbyist, who are using money to manipulate government for their benefit at the expense of the average American. They are very entrenched and very powerful. This is not a conspiracy. Conspiracies are conducted in secret. These people are so powerful they are doing it in the open. I think people are finally catching on. Citizens United has opened the money floodgates. People are now going to have to take back their government from “the Establishment” That is the basis of the Trump candidacy. That is why he is winning.

Bible Thumper March 4, 2016 at 5:49 pm

The only establishment is the one that Donald Trump has been a dues paying member of for thirty years. Both sides of the fence and he will be a member after he is elected. He will then do what he told the NY Times he would do if elected in an off-the-record taped interview. The establishment as you call it has Trump by the balls.

You think having wealth makes Trump independent. The more you have, the more you have to protect.

Nat March 4, 2016 at 6:36 pm

I always laugh when O’Reilly, Rush, Coulter, Hannity etc.. rail against the establishment and elite. The multimillionaires. Donald is firmly in that NYC and Palm Beach club.

TontoBubbaGoldstein March 4, 2016 at 5:02 pm

Anyone that has to repeat “Believe me” as much as Trump does, obviously has problems getting people to believe him and CAN’T BE BELIEVED!!

“Let me be perfectly clear…” was already taken.

From Paul Krugman: The Trump phenomenon threatens the con the GOP establishment has been playing on its own base. I’m talking about the bait and switch in which white voters are induced to hate big government by dog whistles about Those People, but actual policies are all about rewarding the donor class.
