Depot Food Stores will keep their name, but by the end of July they likely will have a new owner.
The Pantry Inc., a publicly traded company that owns 1,149
convenience stores in seven states, signed a definitive agreement Friday
with R&H Maxxon, the company that owns the 53 Depot stores. Pantry
announced the sale Monday.
Peter Sodini, president and CEO of the company, said the deal had been in the works for months.
“They have excellent managers and excellent field people. They’re a
highly desirable chain,” he said Monday. “We’ve had our eye on them.”
The agreement is subject to closing conditions and regulatory
approval, but company officials expect to close the deal near the end of
July by buying out 100 percent of the privately held R&H Maxxon
stock. Mr. Sodini would not disclose how much his company expected to
pay for stock, saying that information usually is released after the
closing. The 53 Depot stores, 41 in South Carolina and 12 in Augusta, will
provide Pantry with a foothold in the Georgia market, Mr. Sodini said.
R&H Maxxon generated sales of about $100 million in the one-year period ending May 1999. Greg Ryberg, president of R&H Maxxon, said in a statement
Monday that Depot Food Stores are an excellent fit with Pantry’s growth
objectives. “We believe the Pantry’s successful track record in acquiring other
convenience store chains, coupled with our dominant presence in our
respective markets should prove to be a strong combination,” he said.
The Pantry Inc. is headquartered in Sanford, N.C. The company has
bought hundreds of convenience stores since Sept. 1 in states such as
Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Greg Ryberg is admired by many people who knew and worked with him. The only one I know who dislikes him enough to make the sick negative remarks on this page is Curtis Loftis, State Treasurer, who was embarrassed by Ryberg when the Senator told the truth about Loftis publicly. Loftis has a long history of posting on Fits News using multiple pseudonyms which he believes makes him anonymous. He is, of course, wrong. Can you imagine a State Constitutional Officer acting this way? Something is very wrong. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Ryberg and his family.
