RE: SC Commerce Program Under Scrutiny
Dear Editor,
While no fan of the (S.C. Department of Commerce’s) Innovation grant program, your recent article shows that your site conducts little to no background research. The program specifically limited dollars to non-profit or government entities, so it was never intended to directly help small business (one of the reasons I didn’t like the program). Secondly, it targeted all the incubator programs rather than existing businesses which pay the taxes (another reason I didn’t like the program). Thirdly, it yielded to the political need to broadly spread money around rather than targeting it to the most effective programs or a regional strategy.
Your site brings up good topics for our state but your delivery leaves much to be desired and could be so much more if elevated.

Anon: Thanks for the constructive criticism. It’s well-taken. This website can’t “deep dive” on everything, but you make good points – and I will try to do better. And thanks for your thoughts on the program. Sounds like you have some insights on why it failed. If you’d like to expound on the subject, we’d love to publish your views.

The Grant programs at the Dept. cannot stand up to scrutiny. They are a political slush fund.G o back to the Tobacco Settlement funds, The money was spread around to give political favor to almost every project, not enough on each project to be successful and create jobs; but, so all politicians could get some credit and a photo op. Most of the projects have never, in years, seen any completion to fruition. Almost a total waste. Other Grants were for nothing more than to buy political favor with the powerful and influential law makers. A little research will show the folie of the programs.
“folly” ..??
And, SC got millions from the settlements that the feds made with the banks after their manufactured bubble burst that went to Commerce and not the victims of the banks, too, right?
Commerce is just where the slush fund resides.
Is there no legislator who will request a LAC audit of Commerce?

Tell me about it.
Tsk, tsk, tsk……Anon, the only thing Will Folks will “dig deep” for is for his bank statements to make sure the checks from his paymasters are coming in as scheduled. Fitsnews is a pay-to play site. Pony up enough bucks for whatever point of view, smear, character assassination that’s required and accordingly William R. Folks will post such an article on shitsnews.
Oh, insider, how you cry when someone focuses on the taxpayer’s money you feel so entitled too!
Go get a real job like the rest of us!
Well the rest of us minus pogo.
For your information, I own several businesses in South and North Carolina. I employ over 200 men and women. I pay my more than my fair share of business and personal taxes so trust me, I do not feel entitled to “taxpayer’s money” as you so ignorantly state.
Unlike, you, I create good, high paying jobs and contribute to communities where my businesses are located.
In closing, get up from the keyboard and get a job….any job, you stupid, uniformed, uneducated loser.
The program is still crap. It is an insiders bill…on purpose or not is beside the point.
Insiders giving our money to their insiders friends. Mr. Folks, thanks for the story.
Anonymous…? Hmm….must be Nikki pecking away on isle 3 in Whole Foods..!
