OR NOT …
There’s been a lot of buzz in South Carolina this year about delayed state income tax refunds … resulting in some bad press for the S.C. Department of Revenue (SCDOR).
So … does the agency have anything to say for itself?
Actually “yes,” it does. At the behest of its director Rick Reames – who has been making quite a name for himself in recent weeks – SCDOR is apparently reforming the way it withholds money from Palmetto paychecks. Specifically, beginning next year, SCDOR will start taking less money out of those paychecks – thus putting more money into people’s pockets on a weekly/ monthly basis.
Oh, and best of all government doesn’t get to enjoy an interest-free hold on as much of your hard-earned money.
It won’t be noticeable at first, but within a decade we could be looking at more than $700 per taxpayer per year. That’s real money that’s kept out of government hands – and in the economy where it belongs.
Obviously there’s an entire cottage industry built around “refund season,” and Reames’ plan to stop withholding so much money from paychecks threatens to upend it. Maybe that’s why the process is so gradual … we don’t know.
Let’s be clear: This isn’t a tax cut … it’s a timing shift regarding when you get your money.
South Carolina wouldn’t know an honest-to-God tax cut if it came up and bit our leaders in the asses …
And let’s be clearer: South Carolinians remain dirt poor – and well behind the national curve when it comes to how many of them are getting paychecks in the first place.
Still, anything that keeps cash from flowing into government coffers we support …
Oh, and we also believe there will be some modest administrative savings accruing to SCDOR as a result of this shift … so that could be a net gain for taxpayers (well, assuming we had a “refund” mechanism at that level).

Way to break a story Fits. This was reported by the State and others months ago. This is just lifted from other outlets. And fits doesn’t even have the decency to cite them.
Retread, Will is only following the fitsnews motto…”we break news weeks, months sometimes years after the other guys. Why? Because we are too damn lazy to find legitimate news stories on our own and prefer to whore ourselves to the highest bidder”.
We smell YOUR bullshit, Will!
It’s all about clicks. And pictures of dollars with tantalizing headlines creates clicks. We all fell for it.
Reames is holding up people’s refunds and getting a pass on it from the public and the press because he’s protected by a network of legislators and influential insiders. He plays up the outsider card but he’s towing the government’s line. We’ve seen it before.
Fuck Reames! This is the same stupid bullshit that Daddy Bush pulled back when he was in office and it was one more straw which ultimately led to my decision not to vote for him on his second run for President.
They aren’t giving us a tax cut, but they believe we are so stupid that this illusion of one will make us happy. Now I’ll have to arrange to have more taken out of my witholding so I don’t wind up paying them at tax time, next year. While minor, it is an inconvenience I could have well done without. I like not having to pay and getting money back atvtax time to pay off bills, buy a new gun or ammo with, etc.
Assholes!
Sounds like you are as stupid as they think if you can’t save the money on your own and need the government to do it for you!
You got me…..I really am stupid and nothing more than a blowhard gassbag know-it-all!
What does your doctor have to say about you talking to yourself on on-line forums?
What he said! Friggen A!
We have the most unqualified pieces of shit running our major agencies in this state. This is inexcusable – they had an entire year to put the necessary practices into place that wouldn’t have screwed over the majority of the state, lower-middle class people who depend on getting that money within a certain time frame.
I’m beginning to doubt whether politicians can be bought so easily. Trump has tried and failed so many times, he’s decided his only way to get what he wants is to run himself.
