Yeah. The Grand Strand these days has many blighted areas, much unemployment, virtually no real off-season surge in tourism and shopping. Yet no Walmart big boxes have closed, and they’re building new neighborhood markets, for which they’re hiring. Maybe the Chinese are taking over Walmart and boosting their presence here. They just love American stores that sell hell out of their shit.
A brand-new Neighborhood Market has recently opened At Cedar Springs (suburban southeast side of Spartanburg) near old Camp Croft. Nice store, and will be only about 5 miles away from the store closed at Pacolet. Several former Pacolet employees will be at the Cedar Springs store.
Store in Pacolet was admittedly too small (part of a ‘pilot’ program tried and now terminated by WalMart) and did not have enough variety of merchandise to be economically viable. Remember, WalMart is “for profit” and the stockholders are the ones that set the policies (although indirectly). Stock price has been stable through most of the recession. “Sound Business Decision” comes to mind.

The retail outlet chain “OLLIE’S” is taking some of the Walmart business because they will have items WM doesn’t have. Also Ollie’s has so much different stuff. If you find a bargain priced item or an item you especially like buy more than one because they may never have it again.
The Walmart distribution are being turned into FEMA death camps because they have a secure “military looking” entrance and constantine wire on the fence. I just learned that on the interweb thingy. All this time thinking they were keeping crackheads from robbing them blind.

Funny you say that. I had a guy that worked for me whose Mother-in Law gifted him with a membership in the Beer of the Month Club. We tried a beer from Africa, S. Africa I believe, labeled Bull Elephant. It came in a clear bottle with very crude printing that included the head of an elephant. The beer was the color of Coke and had a alcohol content like liquor. At the bottom of the bottle was an assortment of straw/hay, sand and pebbles kind of held together with gooey brown syrup. Man, did that stuff knock us on our ass! His M-I-L was always trying to get his wife to leave him citing that he was an alcoholic which made her gift evil and funny as Hell all at the same time.
Hope he left her. If you gots a MIL like that – it’s best to move on.
His wife and her family were filthy rich old school money of the Winter Park, Fl. variety. One of the few people in my life that I’ve known that worked even though he didn’t have to. Said it got him out of the house. His check went to his hobbies (investing) and our tab at the pub next door. His wife was loaded from her trust and he was just waiting on the old bitty to die.

The Pacolet and Gray Court stores were “neighborhood markets” an ill advised experiment in smaller and express service stores that Wal-Mart rolled out a couple of years ago. Only the Winsborro store was a traditional “Superstore”. Of the 154 US stores Wal-Mart is closing only 12 are “Super Centers”. Wrong – Gray Court was an “Express” store model. Even smaller than the Neighborhood Markets and essentially a glorified hybrid Dollar General / Gas Station. Ill advised yes but Wal Mart is adding new stores just as these are closing.
