We love all different kinds of music (well, not country), but there’s something about the songs of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin that have always resonated most with us.
We’re not alone. Go through Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 greatest songs of all-time and the list is littered with contributions from these three bands. And while we were born a little too late to personally experience these British supergroups at their respective zeniths, it’s amazing to see how their body of work is standing the test of time.
Today’s tuneage? It’s one of our-all time favorite songs from The Rolling Stones – “Sympathy for the Devil.” The opening track off of the band’s 1968 Beggar’s Banquet album.

Saw the Stones in Charlotte a few years back and was not disappointed one bit
Liked/enjoyed the Fleetwood Mac (complete with Christie McVeigh!!!) show in Charlotte last year and they were GREAT!!!
I’ve been to shitloads of rock concerts since 1969…But if I could take the “wayback” machine and could only choose one show…………it would have to be Dereck and the Dominoes…..If I could take a second trip for it would be The Alllman Brothers Band (when Duane was alive……..)
I was at the Rare Earth concert at Clemson back in October 1971 when they announced that Duane had been killed in a motorcycle accident. I don’t know what was worse…finding that out or while driving back to Spartanburg after the concert telling my girlfriend I had joined the Army…………
That being said, seeing Robert Cray in a nightclub setting ain’t bad at all……….I’d take seeing him at the Tabernacle in Atlanta or the Open Door in Charlotte over seeing the Stones or any other big named band in a big-assed stadium any day!!!!

The “Sitar” was a “place” (if it even could have been called that…) directly across from the Spartanburg Herald-Journal building that existed from the late 60’s to early 70’s
At the start of the “Southern Rock’ genre every Southern Rock band played there. I guess I’ve seen just about every Southern Rock band that had an album there from 1970 – 1973 EXCEPT for the Allman Brothers Band.I distinctly remember the posters on the telephone poles and the marque announcing that they would be playing. I was 17 years old at the time and you were supposed to 18 to get in so I stayed home and missed seeing/hearing Duane kick ass. Knowing what I know now, I would have begged, bribed or fought to get in to be a part of that night. From what I’ve heard it was incredible (and I’m sure it was). There is a story in the Hub City Press book on music in Spartanburg that details the night (semi-humorous to boot!!).
No shit, I still want to kick myself in the ass every time I think of missing that performance from 46 years ago!!!
***********Come to think of it, if I could only have one trip in the ‘wayback” machine it would be that night in a dinky old former warehouse in Spartanburg that was hot as hell the in the summer, empty beer cans/bottles all over the place and Duane was playing the slide like no other person on earth could (then or now………….)*************** No auditorium can come close!!
BTW: The “Fox” is one fine place fer sure. The last time I was there was to see Loreena Mckennitt (the ‘queen” of Celtic/Middle Eastern/mystic music”. Her rabid fans are called “Loreena’s Minions” & I’m proud to be in that cohort!!!!!

They were so young and had no idea of what lie ahead, Berry Oakley dying in a motorcycle wreck almost to the day in 1972…..(while I was wearing green baggy shit at Ft. Bragg………)

As far as I’m concerned the period of the fall of 1970 – fall of 1971 was the apex of what was to become known as “Southern Rock” and the Allman Brothers (with Duane at the helm) were the “tip of the spear”.
As far as I’m concerned that short beautiful period in the South died when Duane passed and it ain’t been the same since

Just fucking incredible. Saw them 3 times in the ’70s, and every concert was mind-blowing. Including the surprise one at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. They were taking a break in the middle of their 1978 tour, staying in a luxury suite at Maison Sur Mer in MB — and the southeast’s version of Bill Graham, Cecil Corbett of Beach Club Promotions, got them to play the gig to a packed house of 3,000 insane local fans. Probably the smallest audience for a concert they’d had since they played a tiny venue in Valdosta GA in the ’60s.
Peter Tosh opened, and Jagger and Tosh sang together on “Don’t Look Back”, as they did at several of the shows on that tour.
