“Republican” S.C. House majority leader Bruce Bannister is supporting the presidential campaign of former Florida governor Jeb Bush.
News of the endorsement was first published by Bannister’s hometown paper, The Greenville News.
Surprising? No … Bannister is tight with the Upstate, S.C. political empire of David Wilkins, the former S.C. House Speaker who was a big early supporter of Bush’s brother, former U.S. president George W. Bush.
Also, Wilkins has been quietly supporting Bush’s campaign for months while waiting on his home state U.S. Senator, Lindsey Graham, to drop out of the race (which finally happened late last month).
Does Bannister’s endorsement matter?
No …
Bush’s campaign referred to it as a sign of “momentum building for Jeb in South Carolina,” but the truth is Bush is nowhere in Palmetto State polling. Despite the Right to Rise political action committee blanketing the state with pro-Bush television ads, the former frontrunner is currently polling at just 7.3 percent in South Carolina.
