An influential staffer in the “Republican” S.C. House of Representatives was fired this week – and forcibly removed from his office on the grounds of the S.C. State House.
What happened? No one seems to know the full story …
Van Hegler – director of research for the House’s agriculture, natural resources and environmental affairs committee – took to social media to describe his version of what happened.
“As many of you know, as a result of ulcerative colitis, pancreatitis and a bad motorcycle accident, I spent an extended period of time in the hospital, a physical therapy center and at home recuperating,” Hegler wrote. “I was asked by my employers to inform them, by email along with a deadline, of the date of my anticipated return to work. A few days later, I was asked to inform my employers, by email along with another deadline, if I expected to satisfactorily perform my duties when I return to work. I answered both emails timely and positively. On the fourth day of returning to work, I was terminated. I was told that I was out of work too long and it was felt that I would not be able to perform my duties satisfactorily.”
Here’s the interesting part …
“Additionally, I was told that there were two security guards waiting to pack up my office and I was required to immediately leave the building,” Hegler added. “After working for the House of Representatives for almost thirty six years, I was escorted from the building like a criminal.”
Wow …
State House sources tell us they are at a loss to explain the situation. Speculation understandably swirled, however they did tell us there was no “known connection” between Hegler’s removal and the May 2015 resignation of this committee’s former chairman – Nelson Hardwick.
Hardwick has since been indicted on one count of misconduct in office related to sexual harassment allegations filed against him by multiple women.
Jimmy Walters, a former officer in the S.C. House Sergeant-at-Arms office, took to social media to defend Hegler – and pin the blame for his termination on S.C. House clerk Charles Reid.
“He is a sorry piece of sh*t,” Walters wrote, referring to Reid.
We’ll let you know if we get any additional information related to Hegler’s termination …

There is a stench around this . Could it be that some folks were prowling through his office files while he was recuperating? Sounds like the beginning of a good mystery…
There’s a lot of stench around that particular block of downtown Columbia.

Man, William H. Macy sure got fat and grew out his hair.
Charles Reid has unimpeachable character. Waters Is pissed that he got fired for sexually harassing male pages like his dethroned benefactor, Bob Sheheen.
Boy that stinks. Like kicking a downed man. There has to be a lot more there.
Sounds like someone in GOP House Leadership promised that job to a relative, then wouldn’t you know it, the poor guy came back to work. Bunch of sorry MoFo’s running that operation, and the one’s that aren’t, are worse.
Never get high on opiates/alcohol and share shit on Facebook.
For anyone to get thrown out of the State House would indicate that either their moral code rivals that of Mother Theresa or that of Pee Wee Gaskins
On the other hand this particular Cockroach could have been cocking a bigger Cockroach’s Cockroach and according to Title 3.69, paragraph B, third sentence, ” any Cockroach appointed or elected caught cocking the personal Cockroach of a Senior Cockroach can and will have all 18 knees capped and thrown out of the State House straight into the dumpster of One Hung Low Chinese Buffet on the corner of Assembly and Gervais” – believe it or not !
Family Medical Leave Act violations. Could also warrant federal criminal charges.
“agriculture, natural resources and environmental affairs committee”
Maybe he wasn’t compliant enough in the backstabbing of the state by allowing over-pumping from the rivers and streams.
Nope, not enough production of sweet potatoes….
Politics in both party’s have sunk so low no wonder there is nothing left or no one the average citizen can county on from these folks. I wish there were some way to start over in America. We are at an all time low in morals, character and anything that is above board. We have become a worthless nation of individuals!
Not that this was necessarily the case here, but if you haven’t been doing your job and you are out of the office for any length of time, all the shit you haven’t done (or have done wrong) will come to light.
““He is a sorry piece of sh*t,” Walters wrote, referring to Reid.”
Let it be noted that the level of political discourse engaged in by some former State House personnel apparently matches that of many FITSNews regular commenters to a “T.”
To a grand “T”, one, or many could say.
State employee for 36, should have ample grievance rights.
House and Senate employees are at-will. No grievance rights.
Just Demonrats.
Joe Wilson, you’re next.
