Even if the story of a human Jesus is/were a fiction, His Spirit is not a fiction. There’s a lot to learn from the Bible and the stories of Jesus. The most important detail of the entire Old and New Testaments is the fatal flaw of humanity. The story of Jesus is the most superb explanation of it I have ever come across. Before anyone jumps to say the idea of Spirit or spirits is unscientific, think of our use of the word “spirit” to refer to someone’s personality, agenda, and motive. It’s quite handy to have a character (Jesus) who embodies the best of humanity without our blemishes, a model to follow. And if this character is a model for us, He can be depicted as looking like us, whatever race we are, the better for us to identify with Him. A white Jesus (a racial “translation”) reaches white people who need to be reached with His message.
