Well guess what: He’s now the national Coach of the Year.
Clemson University’s Dabo Swinney – in his sixth full season in Tigertown – has won the 2015 Home Depot Coach of the Year Award. He’ll pick up his hardware during a nationally televised awards ceremony on Thursday evening.

Swinney’s Tigers (13-0, 8-0 ACC) defeated three Top 25 teams in the Associated Press poll this year (No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 17 Florida State and No. 8 North Carolina) and earned six consecutive No. 1 rankings from the College Football Playoff. As of this writing his squad has won sixteen straight games – the longest active streak in college football – en route to capturing its first ACC championship in five years.
More important to Clemson fans, Swinney’s team beat arch-rival South Carolina for the second year in a row (following a five-game losing skid).
Since taking over for Tommy Bowden in the middle of the 2008 season, Swinney has posted a 72-26 record as Clemson’s head coach – including five consecutive seasons with at least ten victories.
The Tigers will put their winning streak and undefeated record on the line New Year’s Eve in the Orange Bowl against No. 4 Oklahoma – a team they shredded 40-6 in the 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Cotton Bowl – which pits No. 2 Alabama versus No. 3 Michigan State – for the 2015 national championship.

I am a Gamecock fan and hate that hillbilly, Dabo, but at this point it looks like he deserves it. I do think that the honor and the Heisman should not be decided until after the National Championship game, when the full body of a coach’s or player’s accomplishments can be weighed for the season, but if the decision is made today I’m afraid it has to be Dat’ Boy and it would be a toss-up on Heisman for Watson.
Congratulations, now Clemson needs for the Heisman winner to be Watson and win the four team playoff for the National Championship.

I have no close association with either Clemson or USC and always root for both to do well.
In Lancaster, you can tell which team is having the best season by whether the town is Orange or Garnet. I swear I think everyone keeps a stock of 2 sets of fan gear in their closets.
In my town, there are people that root for both teams, very few die-hard partisans, only the people who attended or have kids in one of the schools or graduated.
Although I graduated from USC (and dig football), I can get only so fired up when the Gamecocks win, and only so disappointed when they suck. There are exceptions (naturally), but in my experience most of the clowns who get genuinely frothed up over the USC-Clemson thing never sat in a classroom at either school. They also tend to handle fast food as a profession.
Yeah, I like football, but I don’t live or die over the results of game.

No love for Notre Dame here either. It is like a our Presidential Elections, you wish they both could lose. I think OSU, ND, and Southern Cal are put at the top of the polls every year before the first down is ever played. Then they work their way down from there. Your Gators should do OK against Michigan. They looked good with the effort they put up against Alabama. ESPN has Michigan up by four, I don’t think so.
We are less than one deep in the offensive line, one only in about the rest of the offense and no one that can punt, PAT, or Field Goal. We have managed only because we have one of the best defenses in the country. We were at the bottom of the East in the pre-season press, predicted for sub .5oo season. I think we did well to keep within two scores. Muschamp left a pretty good Defense but the team discipline was crap. I have a ton of respect for McElwain suspending players no matter how desperately we needed them. That hurt now, but will payoff starting next year.
Florida should be OK for the future, and they really surprised everyone this year.

The kid made a mistake, it was dumb as hell and if I was a Clemson fan I would’ve been mad at him too. But I felt Dabo went way overboard. It actually shocked me no Clemson players went over to him and said “shake it off” like you see other teams do after a kid makes a mistake. I’m not going to defend Swinney, but I do think that it was prabably inconsequential. Don’t you suspect any bias that the criticism comes from a UNC professor?
When someone is disappointed or upset with someone who he really has no legitimate reason to complain, he will find something else and blow it out of proportion. It’s human nature. You can’t criticize Swinney for just beating your team, so find something you can. be critical about.

No I don’t search the internet looking for negative opinions regarding CU. On Facebook, I follow a number of regional newspapers across the SE US. So I see what articles are posted by newspapers in numerous states, and this one came across my screen and I thought it was interesting, and stood in stark contrast to the pious image Dabo works so hard to project. If yiou guys think going back, and going back, and going back, to scream Bible verses at the punter is a good look, go for it.
I wasn’t thrilled with how my team’s success this year, no. No, seeing Dabo demonstrate what kind of asshole he really is on national television make me feel better about my team’s performance? No, not really. I did think it was hilarious and something that is well known in the Upstate about Dabo; he ain’t no Mr. Nice Guy, Bible Thumping, I minister to my players kind of guy, except to the extent it helps him sell his program. Just like the incident when he left the Esso Club (I know the owner personally, do some business together) drunk as a skunk and acted like an ass when he was caught speeding, and went after the police offer. In these 2 instances, you know the real Dabo.
There’s much we can be critical of regarding Spurrier, Swinnery, Muschamp, Meyer, you name the coach. I think the larger point the Tarhole Professor makes is what I’m interested in, that college football is out of control, and not very representative of the University mission is, or was, and should be. The reason why we tolerate all of these assholes, is money and the businesses that they’ve become, which is not what “student-athletes” should be engaged in. It is a professional sport now, and how does that relate to earning a college degree? I’d rather go back to having Freshman being ineligible, have try-out’s announced on the notice posted at the gym bulletin board advising everyone to bring their own cleats. The NFL should be forced to run their own minor league programs, and give our colleges and universities back to us. It works for Major League Baseball. We should stop pretending that these football players are real students, and the coaches are educators, they are neither; they are professionals. So in that context, Dabo did exactly what he should have done as had that punter’s mistake lost the game, he would have lost out on a boatload of money, and that i$ exactly what motivated hi$ respon$e.
