GROUP CHALLENGES NIKKI HALEY TO MAKE REQUEST
The S.C. Farm Bureau Federation is calling on Palmetto State governor Nikki Haley to seek additional federal assistance for farmers dealing with damages from last month’s “Floodmaggedon.”
“We have seen an historical climate event in 2015,” the group’s president – former S.C. House Democratic leader Harry Ott – said. “The flood that took place in early October has been called a 1,000 year event. The economic loss to agriculture is at least 376 million dollars in production cost alone.”
Ott said Haley must make her request immediately – saying there was an “urgent need for action” in light of the federal budget negotiations currently taking place in the nation’s capital.
“There is no way the federal government could have envisioned a crop insurance program to deal with the destruction this event has caused,” Ott added. “Not even the brightest and most skillful business visionary could have planned for this in 2015. We must help our farmers today.”
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) alerted farmers two months ago to a host of programs administered through its Farm Service Agency (FSA). It’s not immediately clear how much farm-specific flood recovery money has been provided to the Palmetto State since then – or how much money in crop insurance claims have been paid out.
In addition to these two funding sources, nonprofits like Farm Aid have been providing aid to South Carolina’s agriculture industry.
Anyway, we’ll see whether Haley seeks additional federal funding …
Frankly, we think the government has already given farmers (including Ott) plenty.

Go ahead. Like Chris Christy, invite Obama to South Carolina to view the damage. Suck up that pride and do what you have to do, Haley. I probably made an unfortunate choice of words that Haley’s detractors will jump on. Ah well!
Uhh huhuhhh huhuhuhhhuhhh… Suck up… huhhhuhuhh uhuhuhhhuhhh…
Hey, we can leach on Federal dollars with the best of ’em.
If only there was an online media source to assist the farmers of West Columbia and Cayce with getting this federal aid. Oh if only such a site existed.
If I was Obama I would make Haley put every request for Federal aid or $$ in writing under her signature, then post it to Facebook. The request would need to detail why she needs the money in a “up by your own bootstraps” state.
I am not trying to be a wise ass, but is there a general accounting of what crops were damaged and destroyed and what actual damage occurred to the land, farm equipment, buildings, etc.
Am I wrong in assuming that this is agricultural aid and will not include aid for losses to non-agricultural residences, businesses, and public infrastructure, etc.
Speaking of Federal aid, are the private citizens of SC,(non-agriculture) who businesses and homes were damaged receiving any Federal Aid?
Excellent questions. You’ll never see an answer to them. It’s only slightly amusing that all these so-called “farmers” will troop dutifully to the polls and vote for Republicans — who deplore federal government spending — but then line up to milk the federal teat at the first opportunity.
These are the Wes Donohue bowtied in the closet fag, led group that wined and cried about the private sector knows best when their potato farm wanted to suck The Edisto dry. And now calling for socialism? Typical hypocrite lobbyist/consultant driven douchebags, feeding at the trough, and demanding more. Same shitheads that always privatize their gains (feeding at the public trough), and socialize their losses. Screw you, those winter crops looked like crap before the flood.

“….LET the farmer, so far as I am concerned, be damned forevermore. To Hell with him, and bad luck to him. He is a tedious fraud and ignoramus, a cheap rogue and hypocrite, the eternal Jack of the human pack. He deserves all that he ever suffers under our economic system, and more. Any city man, not insane, who sheds tears for him is shedding tears of the crocodile.”
“No more grasping, selfish and dishonest mammal, indeed, is known to students of the Anthropoidea. When the going is good for him he robs the rest of us up to the extreme limit of our endurance; when the going is bad be comes bawling for help out of the public till. Has anyone ever heard of a farmer making any sacrifice of his own interests, however slight, to the common good? Has anyone ever heard of a farmer practising or advocating any political idea that was not absolutely self-seeking–that was not, in fact, deliberately designed to loot the rest of us to his gain? Greenbackism, free silver, the government guarantee of prices, bonuses, all the complex fiscal imbecilities of the cow State John Baptists–these are the contributions of the virtuous husbandmen to American political theory. There has never been a time, in good seasons or bad, when his hands were not itching for more; there has never been a time when he was not ready to support any charlatan, however grotesque, who promised to get it for him. Only one issue ever fetches him, and that is the issue of his own profit. He must be promised something definite and valuable, to be paid to him alone, or he is off after some other mountebank. He simply cannot imagine himself as a citizen of a commonwealth, in duty bound to give as well as take; he can imagine himself only as getting all and giving nothing.”
“Yet we are asked to venerate this prehensile moron as the Ur-burgher, the citizen par excellence, the foundation-stone of the state! And why? Because he produces something that all of us must have–that we must get somehow on penalty of death. And how do we get it from him? By submitting helplessly to his unconscionable blackmailing by paying him, not under any rule of reason, but in proportion to his roguery and incompetence, and hence to the direness of our need. I doubt that the human race, as a whole, would submit to that sort of high-jacking, year in and year out, from any other necessary class of men. But the farmers carry it on incessantly, without challenge or reprisal, and the only thing that keeps them from reducing us, at intervals, to actual famine is their own imbecile knavery. They are all willing and eager to pillage us by starving us, but they can’t do it because they can’t resist attempts to swindle each other. Recall, for example, the case of the cottongrowers in the South. Back in the 1920’s they agreed among themselves to cut down the cotton acreage in order to inflate the price–and instantly every party to the agreement began planting more cotton in order to profit by the abstinence of his neighbors. That abstinence being wholly imaginary, the price of cotton fell instead of going up –and then the entire pack of scoundrels began demanding assistance from the national treasury–in brief, began demanding that the rest of us indemnify them for the failure of their plot to blackmail us.”
“The same demand is made sempiternally by the wheat farmers of the Middle West. It is the theory of the zanies who perform at Washington that a grower of wheat devotes himself to that banal art in a philanthropic and patriotic spirit–that he plants and harvests his crop in order that the folks of the cities may not go without bread. It is the plain fact that he raises wheat because it takes less labor than any other crop–because it enables him, after working no more than sixty days a year, to loaf the rest of the twelve months. If wheat-raising could be taken out of the hands of such lazy fellahin and organized as the production of iron or cement is organized, the price might be reduced by two-thirds, and still leave a large profit for entrepreneurs. But what would become of the farmers? Well, what rational man gives a hoot? If wheat went to $10 a bushel tomorrow, and all the workmen of the cities became slaves in name as well as in fact, no farmer in this grand land of freedom would consent voluntarily to a reduction of as much as 1/8 of a cent a bushel. “The greatest wolves,” said E. W. Howe, a graduate of the farm, “are the farmers who bring produce to town to sell.” Wolves? Let us not insult Canis lupus I move the substitution of Hyæna hyæna.”
What is regular old crop insurance for if not droughts and crop flooding and such?
is Ott still employed by the USDA?

Don’t know, but excellent question.
Crop ins. pays out up to 60%. A lot of these guys lost 100%. On a million dollar investment, which is common place today, that still leaves $400,000 that has to come from somewhere. If Haley doesn’t help out, there will be many bankruptcies next year. They say this was a 100 year flood, there is no way to project ins. for that kind of occurrence. As much as I abhor govt. bailouts there comes a time when it is needed. This is one of those times.
Ummmm…Kemosabe…Harry Stump-Money-Ott?…really?…the very same one who resigned his legislative seat for this fat-cat Bureau gig to fill his plate?
Why next we’ll hear DUI-Hit-And-Run-Toal has been “rehired” and our flag-ripping legislators don’t want any HONEST South Carolinians to vote…NO…WAIT !!!
For your reading pleasure.

Soft Sigh couldn’t decide what impressed him more about Toal–it could have been her illegally legislating from the bench at least
Or mayhaps was it all those times she got drunk and fled the scene of her hit-and-runs and then cursed out the Columbia police !!!
“all those times she got drunk and fled the scene of her hit-and-runs and then cursed out the Columbia police !!!”
That’s clearly the most impressive. Only in a semi-feudal state like SC can a patrician get away with that time and again.
“Chief Justice Jean Toal has led our state’s highest court with
distinction and determination.”- Former U.S. Senator Ernest F. “Fritz” Hollings
Remember that Fritz is the one who went around telling everybody in SC that, “Social Security money was all there, in a lock box.” What an ass.
$98 and hour? Wow! Who’s her pimp?
So, it was more damage than the floods of 1767, 1815, 1844, 1887, 1913, 1952, ALL of which were responsible for wiping out midlands crops? How about some money for all the Upstate peach crop losses from freezing temps which have gotten worse since 1976? Or the watermelon crop loss in the late 60’s Sumter County? Did you midlands folk not learn about drainage, or did you believe in all that drought horseshit from the fucking EPA and dickless DHEC?
A lot of farmers lost everything, effects that we will all very in the coming months when food prices become inflated. Crop insurance only pays out a percentage of the investment and is typically seen as a safety net for less drastic situations. I understand that everyone across the state was affected by these floods, but in addition to home and property damages (just like everyone else), their livelihood is also at stake. Did any of you lose half your income due to the flooding? While Ott may have ulterior motives and incentives, his general idea to help those struggling the most is right on track. And if we’re being honest – by helping farmers we help ourselves. South Carolina has always taken pride in our agricultural roots, now is not the time to turn our back to those men and woman who put food on the table and quite literally the shirts on our backs. So please, the next time you make a wildly inappropriate and selfish statement like your sign off, take the time to think of the farmers down the road who grew the cotton for your Ralph Lauren polo while you eat your grass fed burger and locally grown tomatoes.
