Intelligence Report: ISIS “Not Contained”

SHOCKER, RIGHT?

We have consistently argued the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) owes its existence (and much of its weaponry) to America’s failed policy of interventionism in the Middle East.

It is a creature of our own making, in other words.

To recap: America just led a fifteen year “War on Terror” against al-Qaeda – the last terrorist bogeyman.  That conflict cost nearly 8,000 American lives and more than $4 trillion – and its lone “accomplishment” has been the creation of a larger, angrier enemy (one that we now must wage a thirty-year war in order to defeat).

Yeah …

Anybody care to guess how the “War on Terror II” is going to turn out?

Speaking of … what’s the latest on that front?

According to a new story from Kimberly Dozier of The Daily Beast – we learn that intelligence officials recently provided the administration of Barack Obama with a dire report indicating that ISIS was not only far from contained, but “will spread worldwide and grow in numbers” unless it suffers a substantial loss in territory sooner rather than later.

“The report stands in stark contrast to earlier White House assurances that ISIS had been ‘contained’ in Iraq and Syria. And it is already spurring changes in how the U.S. grapples with ISIS, these officials said,” Dozier reported. “It’s also a tacit admission that coalition efforts so far – dropping thousands of bombs and deploying 3,500 U.S. troops as well as other coalition trainers – have been outpaced by ISIS’s ability to expand and attract new followers, even as the yearlong coalition air campaign has helped local forces drive ISIS out of parts of Iraq and Syria.”

In other words, we’re still losing this war.

One day before the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, Obama declared that ISIS had been “contained” – an assessment that has been widely mocked by his critics (and is now being directly refuted by the experts).

So … what should America do with this new information?

Easy: “Hit reset.”

Our government doesn’t have the money to subsidize another Middle Eastern invasion.  Additionally, we don’t have the money to continue providing security to our “allies” in the region.  And even if we did, by now it should be abundantly clear to policymakers that such interventions only spur the growth of radical Islam as opposed to curtailing it.

“ISIS is playing the game with the simple objective of killing everyone who isn’t a Muslim,” we wrote last month.  “And the only way to fight an enemy like that is to offer them the same choice.  Stop the violence – or be consumed by it.”

Indeed.

“Weapons unused are useless weapons …” or so said the angry general in Spies Like Us.  Well, we believe it’s time to start using our weapons indiscriminately (even on our “partners in peace,” if necessary).

That’s the only language these people will understand.

Instead, our nation’s leaders seem intent on pursuing the same strategy that led us into this mess in the first place …

“Intelligence Report: ISIS “Not Contained”…sure don’t need and Intelligence Report to know that.

This is damage control to try slowly releasing the pressure from the fact this Administration has been hiding this from the public all along. This kind of anger this has created is capable of trancending politics and causing a landslide in favor of a anti establishment candidate.

More like created from the vacuum of failed states, and the disenfranchisement of the population by the former dictators.

Rocky who created the “failed” States? I don’t doubt the former dictators were terrible but things have gone from bad to worse under this administration. Liberals have done worse than the screw ups Bush did. At least he could blame it on the heat of 911. I disagree with both policies.

The dictators lost their states. It happens when a disenfranchised population rises up against them. There are plenty examples over the years. Prior to the Arab Spring, we might look at a few of the former Soviet states, Yugoslavia, Laos, Cambodia, a period when Mexico was a failed state, Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe today, Central African Republic. Pakistan was close in the 1970s when Bangladesh broke off. There’s an entire area of study associated to failed states. They typically fail from within and the less homogenous their society, the worse it gets. They typically are solved for with external efforts.

Sorry, going to have to throw the BS flag on that one. The Obama Administration pulled the rug out via SecState machinations. What is even worse is they went against the majority population in some cases. How’s that for begging for blow back? We are kissing so many asses that Obama is losing track of his lies. Everyone who ranted at the Bushes’ and the Saudis has shut up and watched Obama be their puppet. Just looking for some consistency here.

Explain to me how “we” or the “US” or the “CIA” or “Obama” screwed the pooch for Gaddafi? His own people had risen against him, and he would have eventually fallen. What we did was provide a way to level the field to avoid a genocide. For reference to what would have happened see Syria 2014 / 2015. Same with Egypt. Same with Tunisia and Algeria. You show me a homgeneous population we “went against” – even in Egypt the people wanted Mubarak out. Sorry, no BS flag. Those people rose up against their dictators. It happened once in a far away colony too – think around 1775.

We provided weapons and air support thinking they would “like” us. How’s that working? Since when did we start endorsing theocracies?

Rocky Verdad December 7, 2015 at 7:33 pm

I doubt anyone thought they’de be like us. Lybia isn’t a theocracy – they’re more like a messorcacy. Egypt voted the Brotherhood in, what were we supposed to do. Besides, the new friend is Iran. They’re stable, big and strong.

Terry Jones did a bang-up job explaining the Crusades on a mini-series on the History Channel (when it was worth a damn!!).- I’ve got the DVD thank goodness.
I’ve been studying The Crusades for a number of years. The Arabs ain’t over it yet and make the “Stars & Bars”/”Lost Cause” bunch look like rank amateurs. .
The Crusades still has some effect on the Arab psyche but even more can be blamed on “the Great Game” played by the Brits,French, Russians and to a lesser extent “good old Uncle Sam” at the end of WWI. The present “nations” of Syria and Iraq are a result of “The Great Game”. In fact a lot of the Middle East is a result of “The Great Game”
The Russkies have been wanting Syria for a warm water port for over 100 years and now that they’re there they ain’t gonna leave.
For the last few weeks that shrill sounding harpie Tara on WORD acts like she wants to orally service Putin’s ‘unit” because she thinks he’s the only one getting results against ISIL
Dumbshits like her will end up eating those words if this plays out like I’m afraid it might.

Communalism wasn’t contained in 1975. We had been fighting it for over 25 years. So, what is your point? We could’ve been smarter about it, but does anyone think we should not have fought it?

Intelligence Report: ISIS “Not Contained”
And they won’t be, as long as Obama is President.
His strategy of appeasement and kowtowing to the Muslim extremists does not go unnoticed in the Middle East. The Muslim extremist must believe in “Global Warming.”

Doesn’t matter who is President. It won’t be contained until the failed states in the region are stabalized and the disenfranchised are dealt with.

WTI crude oil is down $2:25 at $37.72. That is a big drop. Also the Venezuelan socialists have lost their majority in the legislature.

Rocky Verdad December 7, 2015 at 1:42 pm

The Venezuelen socialists are sooner or later going to fail. The left-leaning government in Argentina is out. Correa in Ecuador won’t survive another election (his party has already been limited in municipal elections last year), and the President of Brazil faces certain defeat in her next election. Fact in point, as those economies grow and their middle classes expand, they, like us, don’t appreciate high taxes and vote the other way. So all is going in the right direction.

You mean some parts of ISIS aren’t contained. ISIS is three headed. Head one – the kaka-phat. That extends along the Euphrates River in eastern Syria and into Anbar. The Iraqi holdings are under intense pressure. Ramadi has been taken back, Mosul is cut off. Those areas will be liberated over the next 3-4 months by Kurd, Iraqi and Iranian forces assisted by coalition air forces. Free Syrian Army and Kurdish and Turkmen resources are moving south toward Ramadi. But until there’s a political solution in Syria, they’ll have the ability to remain – since something like the kaka-phat exists only in failed states. The same will hold true for their other areas – Yemen, Lybia and Sinai. Part two of ISIS is the assissins – i.e. the folks who pulled off the Russian airliner bombing. They’ve been around for decades – they’re terrorists for hire. Mossad, European and American intel folks will continue to fight them in the dark. The third head is it’s attactiveness to dis-enfranchised young Muslims in other areas such as North Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other areas. (That’s the ISIS that spurred the California attack – disgruntled Muslims who ally with the ideology). The way you defeat that is by avoiding the disenfranchisement of folks. And, by avoiding turning this into a Crusader war by declaring war on all Muslims. And no need to blame it on Obama or Bush. The ISIS that thrives in failed states would have arisen anyway. Libya and Yemen failed without Bush or Obama – and Sinai due to political issues in Ciaro. Even in Iraq, the state would have probably failed if you consider Saddam wouldn’t have survived the Arab Spring. These were aging regimes destined to collapse. And since the Saudi’s are relatively worthless in this, we will have to rely on the new power structures of the Middle East – Turkey, Jordan, Iran, Egypt and Tunisia. And BTW – we can’t finalize a settlement in Syria until Putin figures out his efforts won’t work, and that might take another 6 months.

Somebody’s been doing their terr homework! Well done…

I can add only one point to your well-thought out exposition: the “30-year war” FITS drones on about (no pun intended) is a bit of a misnomer, at least to the extent that (as usual) he blames it all on the good ol’ US of A. I modern history, terrorist movements tend to run in generational cycles of about 40-50 years (slightly overlapping, naturally). One widely-read researcher (Dr. James “J.F.” Forest) describes them as “waves,” which works pretty well.

They’re often described as: the Anarchists from ~1880’s-1920’s; the anti-colonialists ~1920’s-1960’s; the New Left ~1960’s-1990’s; and the religiously-inspired terr cycle ~1979-current. So, we’re actually probably 20-30 years into a 40-50 year “wave.” Semantic difference perhaps, but a difference nonetheless…these movements and cycles eventually fold under their own weight.
