The thing you are looking for is called Reality TV. Consumers have become so entrenched with Reality TV, that politics has stepped in to become the next version. Adultery, children out of wedlock, GOP candidates getting forced out of the closet, backroom deals……
People wanted to believe Reality TV was real. After it became clear it was anything but that, the populace went in search of a genre that was real. It simply doesn’t get more real than a bunch of assholes with money getting caught red-handed. Heck, the networks only have to invest money in a reporter instead of a whole staff, and budget to produce a show.
So it isn’t that people only care about their candidate, it’s that they want to watch the next episode, when that other team’s candidate is found to like smoking pole instead of insert tab A in Slot B. The plots are great, because you can always see the ones that are so AGAINST smoking pole are the ones that you know will be found out as actually loving it.

You must of missed the Politico article covering this just the other day. In that article it covered the fact that these rumors have been pushed by opponents since Rubio started climbing the ladder.
You also must have missed where no one could ever produce more than an allegation. Also that Bush’s people have been desperately begging someone to run the rumor without any evidence.

His brother-in-law lived in the same space as the teenage Rubio while he was running the cocaine shipments and working for the Drug Kingpin. I guess Rubio wants us to believe that he was completely clueless as to why his legally unemployed brother-in-law was rolling in cash. To make matters more interesting, after his brother-in-law was released from prison, Rubio continually invites him to be onstage with him during political triumphs. Can you imagine if Lil Marco gets the nomination to have a convicted ex-con on stage at the GOP convention – OK that’s not that hard to imagine.
