BULLDOGS PART WAYS WITH VETERAN HEAD COACH

After fifteen years, 145 wins and a pair of Southeastern Conference championships, Mark Richt and the University of Georgia are parting ways.  According to the school, the split was mutual.  According to ESPN, Richt was fired.

Either way, Georgia will owe Richt a cool $4.1 million … and an already topsy-turvy coaching carousel has been thrown even further out of balance.

“Coach Richt and I met Sunday morning to discuss the status of our football program,” Georgia athletics director Greg McGarity said in a statement, “and we mutually agreed that he would step down as head coach and would have the opportunity to accept other duties and responsibilities at UGA following the bowl game.”

McGarity’s statement made it clear Richt “has the opportunity to remain on our staff at the University of Georgia” where he would be “heavily involved with outreach programs for our former football lettermen.”

“I appreciate the opportunity of serving the University as well as considering any other options that may present themselves in the future,” Richt said in the same statement.

With the bowl game left to play, Richt has posted a 145-51 mark at Georgia – good for second all-time at the school – and a 83-37 record against Southeastern Conference opponents.  His teams won the SEC East six times, had seven Top Ten finishes and won conference championships in 2002 and 2005 (Richt was named the SEC coach of the year in each of those seasons).

He also went 13-2 in Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate – a.k.a. the Bulldogs’ rivalry with Georgia Tech.

Still, it was never quite enough for Bulldog fans – who have been waiting decades for another national title.

Georgia’s last national championship came in 1980 under the legendary head coach Vince Dooley – who hired Richt away from Florida State University, where he spent seven seasons as offensive coordinator under Bobby Bowden.

The 55-year-old Nebraskan has guided the Bulldogs to postseason appearances in each of his fifteen seasons – posting a 9-5 mark in bowl games.

Richt’s impending departure following a 9-3 season could wind up impacting the future of several Southeastern Conference programs.  For example, one of the leading candidates to replace him is Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart – who has also been rumored as a top candidate to replace Steve Spurrier at the University of South Carolina.

Spurrier resigned in midseason after the Gamecocks limped to a 2-4 start.  The team finished 1-5 under interim head coach Shawn Elliott.

South Carolina has whiffed on two of its other top choices.  Houston head coach Tom Herman took his name out of consideration for the Gamecock job last week, while Memphis head coach Justin Fuente is reportedly headed to Virginia Tech to replace Frank Beamer.

Gamecock athletics director Ray Tanner has repeatedly said he wants to have South Carolina’s new head coach in place by the beginning of December.

Something is out of proportion with salaries at universities.

Reply
Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 4:15 pm

No college salaries make more sense than coaches. None are more free-market driven and none are more dependent on results. If anything is out of proportion it would be player salaries.

Reply
TARevolution November 29, 2015 at 4:47 pm

Faculty pay – when you look at the poor results- are WAY out of whack.

Producers have to spend years fixing the minds the university fucks up. In some cases (see Hillary, Obama, Bernie) they just do more harm to the nation…

What do you know about staff/faculty pay?

Please, state a comparison between staff pay and the free market, and include health and retirement benefits.

Let your ignorance flow through you once again.

You think public universities operate in a free-market environment. You’re about as fucking stupid as Bernie Sanders.

Where do they get these fucking idiots? LMAO…

“Faculty pay – when you look at the poor results- are WAY out of whack.”

I know what I made 2 months ago in the private sector, and now know what I make doing the same gig for a university–and it ain’t near the same. Hint: It wasn’t a raise, either.

Please..tell me some more about how my pay and benefits compare to the private sector sinc you claim to know all about it.

TARevolution November 30, 2015 at 5:34 pm

Do REAL businesses offer you sabbatical, tenure and summers off…and life in a child’s world, w/NO true measurement of actual success or failure???..while you pontificate to oblivious and self-important punks?

You are full of shit and a Leftwing indoctrinated Dumbass. If any private sector company is paying you…they are not very good at hiring…considering how many real Americans don’t have decent jobs…

You represent yourself as Clueless.

E Norma Scok November 30, 2015 at 7:19 pm

You’re the clueless one here, fat boy. Your statement above proves your ignorance, all with the argumentative thought process of the whiny clueless liberals you profess to hate. Irony at it’s best.

No one on staff at a college gets summers off, sabbaticals or tenure. Most of collegiate staff jobs are labeled as “time limited”, and offer less pay, lower benefits and less job security than any similar job in the private sector company. if you work in SC academia now, you do so because you believe in the colleges mission and product. It certainly isn’t for pay or career advancement.

Of course, you obviously have never had a job anywhere; academia or private sector, so there’s no way you could possibly know the particulars of either.

TARevolution November 30, 2015 at 8:39 pm

James the Great November 29, 2015 at 5:59 pm

Free market?

Are you on drugs?

State supported schools using tax dollars, donated land, state health and retirement subsidies, money donated under state and federal law that gives the donation tax advantages, confiscated student athletic fees, tax free bonds for athletic buildings, special monopolistic laws for the NCAA, state supported law enforcement for games and other uses…need I go on?

One thing is for sure…the only free market thing about the whole damn program is the coaches salaries!

Reply
Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 6:17 pm

Ignore the gate revenue, athletic booster revenue, television revenue and the publicity it brings to colleges. South Carolina and Clemson would not be as academically successful as they are without athletics.

People like you look at all the money in athletic as dirty or corrupting, when in fact it supports the incomes of thousands. How many businesses would shut down in Clemson without football. How many students or professors would come to the economically hollowed out shell that would be left at Clemson without football. Football is an economic engine for Clemson and the University of South Carolina. It enhances and supports their educational mission.

Reply
James the Great November 29, 2015 at 6:31 pm

You are too quick with your undisciplined tongue.

You call me a liberal and someone that thinks money is dirty.

I am a conservative and a successful businessman. However, I am no fan (fanatic). I have a brain and can use it and the marketplace desires my talents.

Your false choice…that Clemson and Carolina disarm while other schools wage athletic campaigns, is a silly one and not worth comment.

I would point out that SC’s interest should be the education of OUR people and the advancement of our state. The modern university has not done that for SC. It promises much and delivers little.

When our higher education focuses on and educates the corridor of shame, the rural poor and those that are required to work in lieu of school, I will consider higher ed a success.

Playing subsidized games with juveniles does not persuade me that their mission has been accomplished.

Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 6:39 pm

“the marketplace desires my talents.” The public desires football.

You may not be a fan, but if college football was eliminated nationwide your tax liability would increase and/or education would suffer.

James the great November 29, 2015 at 6:41 pm

BS on that.

Higher ed should gear itself to educate South Carolinians.

SEC sports is a distortion that robs many of their chance at a better life. But hey, you had a great Saturday and that seems t o be all that is important to you.

Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 6:55 pm

You see South Carolina as the bottom of the list at everthing good and the top of everything bad. I see a state that many more people are choosing to live at than move away. It because of our quality of life. College football is one of those wonderful things that adds pleasure to people’s lives, even the poor

You seem to prefer being a complainer that looks down on other people’s pleasures.

sparklecity November 29, 2015 at 8:00 pm

Quality of life huh???
Have you looked at all the trash on the side of every fucking road in this state?????
Go take a big slag straight of the Reedy or Broad River or take a dip in the Atlantic near an outfall after a storm when it’s full of fecal coliform from shit or over fertilized lawns and get back to me on that quality of life bullshit………….
Maybe you should buy some more palm (oops, I forgot…PALMETTO) tree decals for the rear window of your car to shore up your false pride up just a little bit more…….

sparklecity November 29, 2015 at 10:02 pm

“College football is one of those wonderful things that adds pleasure to people’s lives, even the poor”‘
“Poor” huh??? Good to know you have your pulse on the downtrodden.. Just how many football tickets did you throw the “poor” so they could have some pleasure in their miserable lives???? Not to mention the shitloads of chronic brain trauma resulting from repetitive contact from a sport that “adds pleasure to people’s lives, even the poor”……….
So now you’re equating college football to Bread & Circus’ from Roman times huh???
I’m sure you are aware that I’ve been posting that same comparison for a number of years so it looks like we have one thing in common!!!!!

sparklecity November 29, 2015 at 10:05 pm

‘The public desires football”……….just like the Romans desired their gladiator “games”!!!!!!!!!!!
You betcha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

James the Great November 29, 2015 at 6:39 pm

Ignore that we are near last in all that is good, and near first in all that is bad.

But hey, for $35,000 you can buy a parking space.

Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 6:45 pm

With a very few exceptions (Ivy league etc..) you would have trouble giving the name of a college without NCAA Division I sports. Sports encourages interest in education. It increases public support for education.

James the Great November 29, 2015 at 6:54 pm

Cause and effect?

Would you not concede that higher education was here first? And that as the sports programs have ascended to great heights the educational level of Americans has fallen in relation to the developed world?

Every study and statistics shows the correlation. But hey, its just a game. And you love your Saturdays at the ball park, no matter how much they cost!

Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 7:03 pm

No I wouldn’t agree. Higher education use to be for the elites. Now colleges are trying to educate a much broader portion of the population that may be less prepared than previous students. It can appear like the product is worse, but the numbers are much higher.

You say you are a businessman. Explain how ending revenue sports will improve public support or financing of higher education.

Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 7:09 pm

I suspect that you are an educated man. I won’t insult you by explaining the difference between correlation and “cause and effect”.

sparklecity November 29, 2015 at 7:49 pm

5 fucking words (plus one abbreviation):
South Carolina Technical Colleges and MIT
The only bright spot in higher education in the Great State of South Carolina (and the one single thing that SHOULD be a source of pride in this fucking state) that is greatly overlooked, under appreciated or acknowledged. Most states don’t have the network of state supported technical colleges that the Great State of South Carolina has to offer.
I slam this state a lot (and it deserves to be slammed INMHO) but the ONE thing that every citizen in the Great State of south Carolina should be proud of is the network of Technical Colleges that are providing REAL education that applies to the student’s career field day after day.
And they do it without ANY fucking football teams, obnoxious corrupt booster clubs or other bullshit that is associated with college sports teams.
You go to a technical college to learn a trade or become a technician, not party your ass off or wax poetic or pull your pud every Saturday in the fall about some college football team that you never played on the field with.
Fuck a bunch of college and professional is what I say!!!!!!

sparklecity November 29, 2015 at 10:22 pm

If sports encourages interest in education then why has the Great State of South Carolina cut it’s funding for state supported universities for a number of years now (which as you claim is all about having universities that have large sports programs – especially football?).
When I went to a major state university I didn’t give a rat’s ass about its football team, it was about the academic program that I chose to enhance my employment possibilities and further my career.

sparklecity November 29, 2015 at 8:01 pm

Well, I guess you’d better tell the thousands of students from all walks of life attending the Great State of South Carolina’s Technical Colleges they are wasting their time (and money) getting a technical education (with a much better chance of employment right after graduation) sans football team…..
You have your head up your ass on so many levels and topics it is almost amusing………..
But then again, I’ve come to expect that………….

Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 8:07 pm

I’m certain if they thought it would enhance the educational mission, they would add athletics and they wouldn’t rely on your advice.

sparklecity November 29, 2015 at 8:13 pm

They don’t need my advice…..
The Technical College system of the Great State of South Carolina has been operating for 50 years and has provided thousands of jobs and growth in industries moving into the Great State of South Carolina (which you like to brag about all the while kissing Queen Namrata’s ass) without a need/reason for organized athletics which it blows your supposition straight out of the water……..

Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 8:17 pm

Every institution has it’s niche. What is god for some is not for others. Community colleges don’t recruit students from large geographic areas. They don’t have dormitories or large numbers who move to attend them.

sparklecity November 29, 2015 at 8:37 pm

I’m referring to Technical Colleges (example Trident Technical College in Charleston, Greenville Technical College (in Greenville obviously…;Tri-County Tech near Clemson; Sumter Tec, & about 6+ more across the state…) At one time, Greenville Tech was the 3rd highest in student population (it could very well still hold 3rd place) in the Great State of South Carolina behind Cluck-Cluck and Tigershit Universities……
They’re NOT fucking community colleges!!!!!!!
You really don’t have a clue…do you???

Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 9:09 pm

You don’t have a clue about South Carolina’s Technical college system.
They are not reasearch universities.
They don’t offer four year degrees.
They have an open door admissions policy.
Wikipedia definition of Community college for the United State: In the United States, community colleges, sometimes called junior college, technical colleges, two-year colleges, or city colleges, are primarily two-year public institutions providing higher education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, andassociate’s degrees.

sparklecity November 29, 2015 at 9:46 pm

Who the fuck said the state Technical Colleges were universities???
Try using that definition you pulled out of your ass from Wikipedia on the State Commission for Technical Education.
They damn near pulled state funding away from Spartanburg Tech when they switched over to a “Community College” (as well they should have and I was all for them doing so).
Again all it show is you really don’t have a clue and without a doubt are talking out of your ass when it comes to this subject.
The point is very simple, you challenged anyone to show an example of a college (or colleges) that are successful without having to rely on a football team.
I provided you with a state wide system of state technical colleges which are PRIMARILY FUNDED by the Great State of South Carolina) NOT “community colleges” (which may or may NOT be totally funded by the state – I’m not aware of any “community college’ in the Great State of South Carolina EXCEPT Spartanburg “Community College’ that derives most of its funding from the state; most like Spartanburg Methodist College (a 2 year school primarily funded by religious organization and in the old days known as Spartanburg Junior College – are not funded primarily by the Great State of South Carolina) as proof that a college can be successful WITHOUT having a football team as a means for success.
And it gauls you ass that I accomplished my mission!!!!!!!

Bible Thumper November 29, 2015 at 8:12 pm

“You have your head up your ass on so many levels and topics it is almost amusing………..”

You are the amusing one. Thousands of people in possitions to make decisions about athletics choose to pursue them. People gain and lose jobs based on those decisions and are trained to make them, but SPARKLECITY is smarter than they are. AMUSING!!!

sparklecity November 29, 2015 at 8:23 pm

You are the one attempting to rationalize that the vast majority of colleges can’t be successful without a successful football team (which IS amusing) and shows that without a doubt you do have your head up your ass.
I just gave you the one shining example of the one thing that the Great State of South Carolina has every right to proud of and you can’t even give a straight answer because obviously you don’t know a thing about the merits of a technical education which does not rely on having a football team (and all the entrapments that go along with it) to make the institution successful.
But you do have relatives in the military………………

E Norma Scok November 29, 2015 at 10:24 pm

I think the part about “with a much better chance of employment right after graduation” Depends a lot on what you major in.

I don’t see many nurses, engineers or accountants looking for a job for long.

sparklecity November 30, 2015 at 10:28 am

And a lot of those nurses attended one of the Great State of South Carolina’s Technical Colleges. and received an Associates Degree and RN license.
Engineering??? Depends on what field of engineering. Right now try getting a job if you are a petroleum engineer – they’re getting laid off in high numbers.
For years Greenville Tech has had the highest passing rate of first time nursing exams in the entire state. Greenville Tech’s nursing school reputation is the best in South Carolina. We’re talking about Associate Degree and being a RN – not a certificate.
And they accomplished this honor without relying on a football team to get them there!!!!!!

E Norma Scok November 30, 2015 at 4:57 pm

Most hospitals won;t hire 2 year nurses any longer–at least not in CHS. MUSC and RSFH have said “no more”.

As for Petroleum engineers…I’m not aware of anywhere in this state that offers that degree. I know some Chem -E’s that went that direction, and again, they had no problem making 6 figures the day they graduated.

Shame that debacle cost the ACC a playoff team IF Clemson loses.

I am shocked that Georgia fired Richt. The SEC may no longer be the conf. of choice for young gun coaches coming up when the word on the street spreads that you can be fired for winning football games.

It reminds me (a tiny bit) of when Clemson fired Ken Hatfield.

He was a Christian. You should be pleased, devil worshiper. The liberal/RINO elite at these universities of dung will tolerate an outspoken Christian IF they win.

Dabo is next.

Limbaughsaphatkhunt November 29, 2015 at 7:45 pm

His problem is not that he’s a Christian, it’s b/c he coached for an SEC team.

The Devil offered Richt a deal, after he turned it down Nick Saban accepted it.;-)

Coaching gigs aren’t that bad, I usually win out in the end. I lost my ass once on a golden fiddle, so I’m sticking to the easy stuff for now.

Speak D Truth November 29, 2015 at 6:31 pm

All of these people bitching about how much money a college football coach gets paid. I bet non of them would turn down that kind of money if it was offered to them for their job.

If a burger flipper made seven figures I’d be trying like hell to be one, but that doesn’t mean they deserve a million a year.

Mark Richt and his family appear to be very nice people, but you are hired as a head football coach to do one thing, win football games. He had a few good years, nothing really great, Fifteen years coaching and six years finishing in the top ten poll ratings. For Georgia fans, that is not good enough. A record like that will put you on an outbound hound heading out of town, figuratively speaking..

pogo November 29, 2015 at 7:37 pm

You are correct however the timing of this with qb Jacob Easton coming in will set Georgia back a decade. This kid is Stafford PLUS.

Georgia messed up BIG.qb’s control football at the high school, college and pro levels.Easton will NOT attend Georgia now unless Tom Herman is hired.

erneba November 29, 2015 at 7:49 pm

Yes, Georgia could experience a “bump in the road” with current team members and the athletes recruited by Richt. Good talent and good coaching should overcome difficulties in that area. A good college-level coach should be able to motivate young players be successful at at school like Georgia.
I read that Richt will still be associated with the school, in what capacity, I don’t know. And Richt has a net worth of about nine to ten million dollars, so we will not see him down at the local Wal Mart working part-time, stocking the shelves.

pogo November 29, 2015 at 7:51 pm

LSU didn’t fire Miles because the 15 MILLION dollar payoff was going to become a problem for future loans to the university.

Miles had the ‘Tiger(s) by the tail’….

Not only is Mark Richt’s winning percentage greater than any other Georgia coach since Robert Winston, who only coached six games in 1894, and was replaced by Pop Warner, if he wins the bowl game, his last three years would also beat their winning percentages.

Richt had success at Georgia, but he couldn’t win the “big game.” For example, his career record versus teams coached by Spurrier: 6-16. Five of those six were against the ‘Cocks. Richt lost too many games against the likes of Florida. Georgia fans and boosters don’t see why they can’t compete with ‘Bama on a consistent basis. There’s some logic in that view. Georgia recruits very well. During Richt’s tenure Georgia had 75 NFL draftees (2nd only to LSU and nine ahead of Alabama) and 13 First Round draftees. Take a look around the NFL. Some of the best players are former Bulldogs — and Richt hasn’t won even an SEC Championship in a decade.

Yes, good point, a lot of good talent passed through Georgia on the way to the Pros. And the state of Georgia always produces good talent at the high school level and lots of it.

Who has won BIG games in college football besides Urban Meyer and Nick Saban in the last decade?

Recruit well? Please define that.Ohio State will lose 8 underclassmen to the NFL draft this INCLUDING 5 projected in the 1st round AND the 1st pick-AND will be BETTER next year!!!!

As things stand today, Ohio State has the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. With space being limited, will the Buckeyes be able to maintain that spot and end Alabama’s streak of five consecutive top ranked classes?

A man fell in love with the girl of his dreams. They were perfect for each other, except for one minor problem: She was an Michigan State Spartans fan and he was a Michigan Wolverines fan. He decided to make the ultimate sacrifice and become a Spartans fan.

He went to the doctor and asked if there was an easy way to do this. The doctor replied, “Yes, it’s a very simple procedure. What we do is go in and remove half your brain. When you wake up, you will be an Michigan State Spartans fan.”

The man agrees, and the next week goes into surgery. After he wakes up the doctor comes up to him concerned. “Sir, I apologize, but there was a mix-up with the scalpel. Instead of removing half your brain we removed 3/4 of it. How do you feel?”

The man sat up, looked around, and said “GO BUCKEYES!”

If Dabo played outside the ACC, that Some Beech would have 2 or 3 losses this year, even if it is Clemson’s best team since Danny. You’re a Dumbass if you don’t believe that he’d have losses.

A 3-9 – disarrayed – SC exposed Clemson as Not-Ready-For-Playoff. UNC may take Clemson out if the ACC officials don’t cheat to keep Clemson undefeated….

I wouldn’t boast too heavily, you only beat us by 5 points, and we were awful this season. You have a few games left for potential Clemsoning, don’t beg for it to come.

How does losing to a ranked team in any playoff equal Clemsoning? Does that mean we can never lose again without it being called Clemsoning?
