You can’t buy a championship. USC boosters need to stop trying to shortchange the hard work and time it takes to consistently win, poll, and recruit well. Stop with the multimillion dollar retread shortcuts already. Hire Matt Campbell and give him 10 years to get a championship. He knows football and his players will play their hearts out for him. Interesting speculation, if Richt wants to extend his coaching career, it may be a good fit for him. South Carolina needs to get someone in the hopper right-a-away. The level of talent at USC can’t be very deep, because many top recruits supposedly deserted Steve Spurrier when they sensed he might not be around for a full four years that they would be in school. He could expand the recruiting to include Georgia with his knowledge of the state.
Many fans and Alumni may be pissed, if he is hired, but I suspect he is an honorable person and do the best he could if he took the opportunity at USC.

From personal knowledge disclosed to me by two assistant football coaches who came with the new head coach to Carolina: these two guys were under continuing psychiatric care because of the job pressures and stress.
That is the nature of coaching. Type A personalities that spin themselves up about many things….football being just one of them.
Coaching is a job but more pointedly, it is an industry. When coaches make a lot of money many more people and entities increase their money making ability as well as their power and prestige.
Don’t think for a moment that USC is hiring a coach for the football field only. Lots of people have a financial stake in the decision and the one thing you can know for sure is that the opinion of the average fan does not matter one bit.

From what I’ve been told both Holtz and Spurrier never claimed or registered as South Carolina legal residents. I heard both kept apartments/condos in South Carolina but their legal residence (to include their driver’s license) was not in the Great State of South Carolina
Again, I don’t give a rats’s ass who runs any college football team – all are hopelessly corrupt (well maybe not Furman but then again maybe so – I don’t follow Furman like I used to but in their day the Furman athlete represented all that a student athlete is supposed to be as far as the relationship between academics and athletic talent is concerned – I did not attend Furman BTW). Plus, Furman is not primarly funded by the Great State of South Carolina
Until all state supported colleges require academic and sports scholarships to be awarded to bona-fide residents of the state who graduated from in-state high schools/home schools, and the coaching staff be legal residents of the state supported college they are coaching then this stuff is pure bullshit.
If that was a reality, then the people of that state would have a reason to have pride about their state supported college or university athletic programs – other than that the players & coaches are hired guns for the most part. The people of the Great State of South Carolina could say, “The Great State of South Carolina produced the best football team or class of engineers in the entire United States during the year 2015 and they were totally home grown” (as could any other state for that matter)

I heard attendance at The Citadel game was 77,000. I didn’t realize that Williams Brice Stadium held 160,000, because the stadium was half full in the first half, and then less than that because you know USCe football fans only have to attend the first half so they can get back to drinking or beat traffic.

Past performance doesn’t always dictate future success. Spurrier was hired because of his personal and coaching successes at FL and USC basically asked him to bring his national championship-winning coaching to SC and do the same thing here. Yes, he had a few 11-win seasons (the best in USC history), but he didn’t win a single SEC championship, let alone a national one. We need someone who can win and, more importantly, RECRUIT. If Mark Richt can recruit, get him. If Kirby Smart can recruit, get him. Whoever USC gets, they need to freaking recruit because if Dabo has shown us anything, it’s that you can be a shitty coach, but still have the number one team if you can hire great coordinators and RECRUIT.
Mark did not have to recruit at UGA.
Interesting most of the comments are negative. My positive take is Richt is a genuinely nice guy, runs a clean program with integrity, wins an average of almost 10 games a year, consistently goes to a bowl game, great recruiter, very good coach. Richt is the best coach available. SC could do much worse.
Kirby Smart may be a good recruiter and a good coordinator but there is no guarantee a good coordinator will be a good/great head coach. College football is littered with good/great coordinators who failed miserably as a head coach. Case in point is Gene Chizik (he was fired 2 years after winning a National Championship) and look at the success he is having today at North Carolina as their defensive coordinator.
Firing Richt was idiotic. Maybe they’ll replace him with Dooley’s kid. If that doesn’t work out… howsabout Lane Kiffen?
