HOUSE GOP DROPS THE BALL … CONSERVATIVE GROUP PICKS IT UP
We’ve been associated with a lot of crazy stories (what can we say – we cover South Carolina politics) but the ongoing tiff regarding a scheduled – then abruptly canceled – “Republican” campaign school is one of the most bizarre.
To briefly recap, two weeks ago this website ran an item from our guest columnist Taylor Brown regarding a campaign school sponsored by the House “Republican” Caucus.
GOP “Majority” leader Bruce Bannister cut a video promoting the event, and Brown enlisted this website’s founding editor and several other political luminaries to appear at the confab. We heard from several prospective candidates who were excited to attend, too.
Days later, however, the event was called off – reportedly due to an aide’s failure to consult the football calendar (specifically No. 1 Clemson University’s date with North Carolina in the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference championship game).
Is that the real reason the scheduled gathering was canceled, though?
Not according to our sources …
Several state lawmakers familiar with the situation tell FITS the cancellation of the campaign school was due to a turf war between rival GOP political consultants over control of the caucus’ consulting contracts. In fact the bad blood between these consultants and operatives has now spilled over into spats between legislators – with threats, allegations and recrimination abounding.
“A lot of people were lied to, a lot of people are upset,” one GOP House member not affiliated with either of the warring consulting factions told FITS. “It’s a missed opportunity. We need to be growing this party – and giving our candidates everything they need to win elections.”
Now the badly divided GOP caucus is having its nose rubbed in it by a conservative group. Seizing on the caucus’ cancellation announcement, the S.C. Club for Growth announced this week its intention to host an event in Charleston on December 5.
“The liberal Republican establishment has disappointed the people of South Carolina,” S.C. Club for Growth executive director RJ May said. “Once again, they have failed to follow through on their promises.”
“The people of the Lowcountry were told they would have a campaign school, and we’re going to give them one,” May added. “We encourage all pro-growth, limited government conservatives seeking to challenge liberal Republicans and democrats to join us the morning of December 5.”
Nice!
Unlike the House GOP event (which set an entry fee of $45 per person), the Club said its event – which would “fill the ever increasing void left by legislative leadership” – would be free of charge.
“There shouldn’t be a price tag for entry when trying to make South Carolina a better place to live, work, and raise a family,” May said.
The Club’s decision to sponsor the school is significant – especially in light of its recent renewed advocacy on fiscal matters. Just last week, we noted how the organization was preparing to ramp up its efforts to hold sitting lawmakers accountable for how they manage a flood of new money coming into Columbia, S.C.
Whatever internal squabbling precipitated the demise of the GOP campaign school, the situation has now turned into a nightmare for House leaders – especially Bannister and his boss, fiscally liberal S.C. Speaker Jay Lucas.
Not only has the GOP muffed a major potential outreach opportunity, its leaders have gift-wrapped an electoral opportunity for those looking to defeat liberal “Republicans” in next spring’s primary elections.
Additionally, party leaders have alienated this website’s founding editor Will Folks – who was approached and invited to attend the campaign school only to later be told he was “too controversial” for some of the establishment GOP lawmakers originally scheduled to attend.
We’re trying to think … is there a way the GOP could have possibly screwed the pooch on this event any more thoroughly? No. There isn’t.

Good god, you republicans are a mess.
And if Will isn’t a republican, then why are he and the other groupies working a republican campaign school. This shit is too hilarious!
Excellent point!
Fits is constantly ridiculing Republicans ,claiming over and over that he is “through with them” etc etc.
Now he admits that he himself was going to participate in a campaign “school” to help elect more “Republicans!”Not that he is one of course.
Yep Hilarious is the word!
I think what Will means is that the RNC doesn’t want him to tell people he’s a “republican” because they don’t claim him.
Everyone named Jesus is not the “Lord and Savior” of mankind!
$45 Dollars?Campaign school? Does that include a blow job and heavy hors d’oeuvres?
Yes, from the guest speaker himself, and his assistant. They post here regularly. But with a name like 9-inch – you may need to pay a little extra!!!
Not when I can get $20 an inch at Granby Park…
Nothing embarrasses Republicans more than me and GrandTango though! LMAO!!!
Isn’t the guest instructor coming from out of state?
What about me!?!
Are there any public officials or candidates who would meet you publicly?
Hell, no! Why would they? I made up stories about Nikki to get attention after I got canned. Trump did let me take a picture of his fancy jet plane, though. Does that count?
And don’t forget you had a cameo role on Southern Charm.
Now, I’m having a hard time understanding this. Why wouldn’t Republicans not want the participation of a person who has made unsubstantiated personal accusations against the most popular elected official in the state and calls the majority of Republicans RINOs? It just don’t figure?
Because he’s a REPUBLICAN of course.
A disgruntled one?Yes, but still a died in the wool REPUBLICAN.
What’s humorous are those here that think he isn’t.
There shouldn’t be a price tag for entry when trying to make South Carolina a better place to live, work, raise a family. I had no idea that was their goal. That is total BS.

You know what embarrases republicans? FitsNews & Will Folks.
Probably the real reason they shut it down. FitsNews involvement.
Definitely the reason. Read the article. It’s one long butthurt.
It’s okay, he’ll still vote for them.
Will embarrasses everyone. Even Vincent Sheheen would only meet him in private.
Will Folks is NOT a “republican”, we will have nothing to do with him.
“Additionally, party leaders have alienated this website’s founding editor Will Folks”
So much to laugh at in this one, short quip.
I like Libertarians, often agree with them, though not always. I wouldn’t want a Libertarian advising Republicans how to win elections either. What you guys need to do is hold a Campaign School for Libertarians. I would suggest making it free to attend too.
Free?
That’s for socialists!
We will charge what the market dictates…………….oh, I see……
Yeah, it’s free.
Who are the operative in a pissing match?
As usual. We don’t need Democrats in SC. We do enough damage to each other without their “help”. LOL
like voting for Lee “not very” Bright
Say what you want about Bright. (I worked for Connor.) But at least he stood for something. As opposed to Grahamnasty , which only stands for himself. Any of those seven candidates would have been better.
SCCG useless as Will Folks……. and Tits on a Boar Hawg
****….meanwhile over at the Democrat campaign school class…***
Dean Mayor Riley: ” Class if you would…lets review voter ID regulations by taking out your drivers permit and having a close look…”
Leon Stavrijackus: ” I seem to have lost my permit…..is that why I lost this last election..?”
Nancy Mace: ” No Leon, now if you would had a better copy of some building “permits” and Beidler Forest land swap easement “permits” to campaign against Tecklinburrg with then you may not have to be taking this course again..”
Anita Zucker: ” Please be quiet…..I found my permit and I need to know how to use this permit to educate some Century Aluminum workers on how to vote….”
Brian Hicks: “Oh good god……”
“A lot of people were lied to, a lot of people are upset,” one GOP House member not affiliated with either of the warring consulting factions told FITS. “It’s a missed opportunity. We need to be growing this party – and giving our candidates everything they need to win elections.”
HOLY MARY, MOTHER OF GOD!
@SicWillie @FitsNews @WillFolks, do you mean to tell us that some of the consultants in SC actually lie, and go to war against each other?
This is crushing news. I may have to just break down and get drunk now.
“Different factions — different actions” —- the additional sin is not inviting some of you guys (and gals) to participate.
The funniest part of this whole thing is the idea that anyone cares a whit what Folks thinks about anything. Believe me, they don’t. Mainly they just laugh at him.
