YES … WHICH IS WHY IT’S A SHAME IT WON’T HAPPEN
There are rumors that the University of South Carolina has already chosen its next head football coach – and is waiting until the end of the season to announce the much-anticipated hire. In fact we learned over the weekend that current Gamecock assistant coaches have been told to stop their recruiting efforts (to the extent they were making any in the first place).
This allows the incoming coach to make the final decision regarding scholarships.
The top three prospects for the Gamecock job? Houston head coach Tom Herman, Memphis head coach Justin Fuente and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.
One name we think should be added to the list? Peyton Manning.
The 39-year-old former University of Tennessee standout recently broke Brett Favre‘s all-time passing mark – and he’s one victory away from becoming the NFL’s all-time winningest starting quarterback. Last year he broke Favre’s mark for career touchdown passes. A five-time MVP, Manning is in his 18th season in the league – and likely his last.
What will he do when he retires? That’s a good question …
There is no more diligent a student of the game than Manning – who runs a quarterback academy and has been described as an “on-field offensive coordinator.” He knows the game inside and out, and becoming a head coach at either the college or professional level seems like his destiny.
Of course Manning hasn’t exactly been keen on the speculation. In addressing his coaching future back in September on the Dan Patrick radio show, he seemed to pour cold water on the head coaching concept – even if his alma mater came calling.
“Quarterbacks coach, I would do at Tennessee. Head coach? Absolutely not,” Manning told Patrick.” “People in Tennessee like me right now, Dan – I don’t know why. But you become the head coach and cut that in half right away. ‘Why are you throwing it on 4th and 1? Why did you punt there; you should go for it.’ Cut it in half – it’s like being in politics.”
“Quarterbacks coach, you probably could stay under the radar,” Manning added. “You get your quarterbacks throwing a lot of completions, you probably could stay in good favor.”
And if Tennessee called and expressed an interest in hiring him for that position?
“That’d be something,” Manning said.
Hmmmm …
Obviously Manning isn’t going to be the Gamecocks’ next head coach. South Carolina’s regular season ends on November 28, and Manning will be playing with the Denver Broncos through the end of December (and into January if his team makes the playoffs). The timing just doesn’t work.
But it’s an intriguing possibility, isn’t it? Seriously: Imagine the steady stream of five-star high school signal callers that would flock to Columbia, S.C. to play for Manning. And imagine the wide receiver recruits that would follow them.
Manning is also young, meaning he’s the sort of head coach you could build a program around for years to come …
Look, we know it isn’t going to happen. This is probably just our founding editor’s “man-crush” on Manning talking again … but when you stop to think about it there’s a lot of upside to consider.

ROFLMAO
He’s too old to play college ball, and never coached – yeah, great plan.
It looks like you, as well as many other commenters didn’t read the entire piece.
Is that common here? Is Fits too long-winded?
Anyway, there’s the paragraph in the middle in which Manning says, “Absolutely not” to being a head coach. And then the last paragraph in which Fits says he knows it’ll never happen.
Can I yawn now?
This has got to be one of the dumbest articles I have read in a very long time.
You haven’t been here long have you?
Lol! No Lulz, I was just passing through.
Nope, you missed the faux abortion SC Corrections article a few days ago.
Volunteers would burn down Columbia before that happened, just saying. While I haven’t been to Tuscaloosa during football season, I would have to say I’ve never seen a more devoted and spirited town than Knoxville. That includes my own beloved Gainesville.
As an affiliate of #blacklivesmatter at the University of South Carolina, we oppose Peyton Manning’s selection as coach unless he is willing to atone for his family’s history of racial injustice in Mississippi and Louisiana and reject all the benefits of white privilege.
We call for an investigation of Peyton’s mother’s involvement in the death of three civil rights workers in Philadelphia, Mississippi as a teenager. We also questions her involvement in pageants objectifying women.
Believe me…the best thing for your football team right now is to stop playing games. You might as well use BLM as an excuse to end the season.
USC wants Tom Hermon, former offensive coordinator at THE Ohio State University, who has Houston undefeated.
Thank you, captain obvious.
I reported it two weeks ago.
I read an article somewhere about trying to get Mississippi State’s Head Football Coach, Dan Mullen. It sounds as reasonable as any speculation I have read or heard about up to this point.
It would give Mullen a chance to stay in a high profile coaching position within the SEC by competing in the less demanding SEC East. By no means is the SEC East a pushover, but overall, it has to be less demanding than playing in the SEC West.
And he already knows how to say “yew haw.”
He has a proven record, seems like a nice guy, and unlike the past few USC Head Coaches, he is less than seventy-five years old.
So you’d hire a head SEC coach with someone who has absolutely no coaching experience or ever held any coaching position at the college level? Excellent choice!!!
The next coach will be black.
Tom Herman isn’t black.
If he does that Dabo rap dance like an inner city thug so the players like him-does that count?

Kinda like this?
Wonder if Peyton can dance?
It’s ok Mama….the butthurt is strong with this one.
I guess it could be Clemson’s #1 ranking or the undefeated season or the fact our coach didn’t quit in the middle of the season b/c the team sucks so bad or our QB is in Heisman contention….who knows?
Who said he’s the next coach?
Catlyn Jenner, once the greatest athlete in the world, is my first choice. He/She represents so many diverse groups that we will all be included. If she has an affair with a negro player, that adds another group.
I would feel safe. Everyone would be happy. I bet we could even get the Obama Administration to give out participation trophies!
It didn’t work when Johnny Unitas’ son played for the Gamecocks: just saying.
Considering Spurrier coached at USC against his Fla. Gators and home State Tenn. Volunteers; Manning might try coaching in SC vs. Tenn.
Either way, Professional NFL Players have a PHD in Football. Most College Coaches have a BA in PE, if that. That’s why most College Coaches fail big time in NFL coaching positions. They are ridiculously over paid high school coaches.
USC needs a proper coach with a PHD in NFL Football. Not a BS, i.e., Bull Shit: in College Football with an NFL Coaches’ paycheck.
Shit, the average tenure in the NFL is 3 years. What job do you have where three years makes you an expert?
The reason most college coaches fail in the NFL is because in the NFL they are not calling the shots, the players are.
Would you take a player with the work ethic of Clowney as your next head coach? The players would practice maybe once a week.
YEP, if he were a Pro Bowl player with several years of experience.
It’s a simple game, to be great you have to know it well.
Please fill us in on his coaching knowledge. Being a player and being a coach are two different things.
dumb fantasy piece. although carolina should hire marcus lattimore as the next head coach and south carolina will be a power for the next 40 years. marcus lattimore is the ONLY CHOICE. MARCUS LATTIMORE knows as much about football as he needs to, and he could have 5 free years to get the program going. he will be the greatest recruiter and motivator imaginable . marcus lattimore for the next 40 yeARS.
And the Dirtpeckers are still jerking off to the thought of Marcus Lattimore doing anything.
And Jadaveon Clowney
I heard he’s hurt again. If I were the coach I would have him checked for a yeast infection. The man’s a pussy. JJ Watt plays with broken noses, pulls and tears…….Clowney can’t play if he’s got a hangnail. What a waste of money on a two bit quitter just like this coach….The Old Ball Sack
and what do either of them have to do with USC now? Both of them came to school here and never once lost to you. What does it matter now that they are gone? Butt hurt much little boys?
You know, this is my time visiting the site in months, and now I remember why I’d dumped this drivel.
First off, the non-recruiting thing was denied BY THE UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS DIRECTOR AND HEAD COACH ON SATURDAY!!!
Ignoring the Tennessee ties, Peyton Manning has ZERO coaching experience! Just because ol’ Tom Moore and prayin’ Tony Dungy let him change plays based on defensive alignment AFTER A DECADE IN THE SYSTEM does not making him instantaneous head coaching material. He has never been a position coach, never been a coordinator, and you just want to drop him into the SEC??? Wow.
Hell, you know who even realizes this better than you do? PEYTON FRAKKING MANNING!!!
maybe Kirby will hire Payton
Lulz,…He’d make just a good of a gamecock that you said Braxton Miller would last year about this time.

I’ll give it to you cocks..you have a vivid imagination.
The chicken curse returns…woe…
Crippled Chickens will eat Tiger meat on Saturday.
