Nikki Haley’s “Refugee Kabuki”

SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR’S STAND AGAINST SYRIAN REFUGEES ISN’T ALL IT’S CRACKED UP TO BE

S.C. governor Nikki Haley didn’t exactly distinguish herself this week in handling a controversial refugee resettlement program in her home state.  In fact that’s putting it politely.

Haley screwed the pooch … dealing a major blow to the latest round of buzz surrounding her vice presidential aspirations.

While other governors were aggressively putting the kibosh on the programs following last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris, Haley – who has embraced the refugee resettlements – was equivocating.  In fact it wasn’t till pressure had ramped up to a fever pitch in the Palmetto State that her administration finally made a “request” to the U.S. State Department to block Syrian refugees from coming to South Carolina.

The boldest criticism of Haley came from Upstate S.C. Senator Kevin Bryant – who called her administration out for its failure to heed the will of the people.

KEVIN BRYANT
KEVIN BRYANT

“The citizens of Spartanburg County pleaded with you back in the Spring to halt the influx of unknown and unaccountable strangers into their community,” Bryant wrote in a letter to Haley.  “The promises of the Obama Administration that it had vetted these individuals probably mirrored those given by the European Union to Parisians – and see where we are now.  We simply cannot welcome potential terrorists as ‘refugees’ from jihadist strongholds in the Middle East and Africa.”

“Your record of support for this program must end – today,” Bryant added.  “I again join my colleagues in the General Assembly and implore you to cancel the agreement that you and the South Carolina Department of Social Services have made with third party groups to provide shelter to these potential terrorists. Your first duty is to South Carolina and her citizens. Please do not fail them.”

That’s actually what we’ve called on Haley to do from the beginning of this drama: Stop the program.

She never should have started it in the first place, actually – in fact she was specifically enjoined from doing so by budget writers in the S.C. General Assembly.

But she didn’t listen … running the resettlement scam out of her scandal-scarred S.C. Department of Social Services (SCDSS) even though it received no affirmative vote from the local county council (as was required by the state budget proviso).

Now that Haley has been backed in a corner and forced to address the issue, do her words provide South Carolinians with any protection?

“I have asked Secretary John Kerry and the United States Department of State to suspend efforts to resettle Syrian refugees in South Carolina,” Haley wrote in a letter (.pdf here) to fuming legislators.

JOHN KERRY
JOHN KERRY

Meanwhile in a separate letter to Kerry (.pdf here), Haley requested that his agency “not resettle any Syrian refugees in South Carolina.”

But do Haley’s letters do the trick?  No … not even a little bit.

Aside from the passive nature of Haley’s communiques (i.e. “requesting” not “informing”), it’s not clear whether she has the authority to pick and choose which refugees South Carolina accepts once it has agreed to participate in the program.  Once states bind themselves to take refugees, they haven’t historically been permitted to change the terms of the arrangement.

More to the point, excluding Syrian refugees from the influx of new Palmetto State dependents doesn’t necessarily mitigate the threat of Muslim extremists using the program to gain a foothold.   And it certainly doesn’t put a stop to the costs associated with caring for these refugees.

For that to happen the program must stop, period.

In fact several state lawmakers – led by S.C. Rep. Donna Hicks of Spartanburg – are pushing for Haley to call off the resettlements altogether.

As we reported exclusively back in April, previous resettlement campaigns couched as “evangelical” efforts have in reality been front groups for liberal campaigns like the National Immigration Forum – a group that’s received funding from organizations affiliated with billionaire liberal financier George Soros.  In fact one of the groups receiving funding from Soros – the so-called “Evangelical Immigration Table” – has a South Carolina presence.  Also, World Relief – the group which has ingratiated itself with several Upstate religious organizations in an effort to facilitate the resettlements – receives the vast majority of its funding from taxpayer-funded grants.

Which brings us to our fundamental problem with the resettlement program: It is using tax dollars to impose new, long-term burdens on taxpayers at a time when they simply cannot afford it.

That’s been our concern all along … we cannot afford it.

Lying and/or equivocating on issues that are of very little importance or committing the offense well before the sell-by date usually proves to be of little consequence for most politicians. The public usually has a short memory.
The re-settling of Middle East refuges has a long shelf life and could spell disaster as far out as next year’s Presidential election for many politicians. The Democrats should suffer for Obama’s absolute ineptness in dealing with this issue. An attack, in the United States, that can be linked to refuges participating in this program, will spell disaster for current politicians supporting the program. This Paris massacre is already causing a political upheaval in Europe and an attack in the US will do the same here.

Problem with the Syrian refugees issue is he appears to Americans that for political purposes he is willing to allow this nation to be attacked from within.

Truth is that no governor can stop our out of control president from resettling any refugee in any state. Even if the governor were some how able to keep them from placing them in “X city” or “X county” (which the courts would not support), the President could just install them at “Fort Podunk” or whatever else federal property happens to be available.

At THAT point, the President could federalize the National Guard and the State would sue in Federal court. With a stay of federalization, it would already be November 2016. Just sayin’.

“…The UNHCR essentially decides who merits refugee status based on the parameters laid out in the 1951 Refugee Convention…

“… average processing time for refugee applications is 12 to 18 months, but Syrian applications can take significantly longer because of security concerns and difficulties in verifying their information….”

“….Several federal agencies, including the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security, the Defense Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are involved in the process, which Deputy State Department Spokesman Mark Toner recently called, “the most stringent security process for anyone entering the United States.”…” (Really, what could the State Dept, HHS or the FBI know about Akmed the goat herder from Damascus Syria?)

Oh yeah. The whole Florence/ Canon City area is full of prisons.
We should take the Gitmo prisoners. We definitely have the infastructure.
As frightened as you are of Syrian refugees, I bet you guys would faint from the vapors if a Gitmo detainee was rumoured to come to your state.

idcydm November 17, 2015 at 1:13 pm

Just thought that might be where you live or maybe Florence/ Canon City. You seem to have a lot of time on you hands to surf the internet for southern web sites and thestate.

Canon City prisoners built a little bit of infrastructure there. Ride a motorcycle over their Skyline Drive, if you dare.

There are as many guns as people in this state. You’d think that would quell the fear mongering….but no, The Home Of The Brave, we aren’t. There were plenty of smartass remarks about France’s gun laws when this attack first happened and how having guns would have stopped it. But the Brave Ones living in bum fuck nowhere are shaking in their boots now.

Yep! The same freedom loving patriots are scared of heavily vetted immigrants who mostly share their same religion. They’re Confederate forebearers were used to getting there asses handed to them and then having to eat crow, so maybe it’s in their DNA to be ‘all talk, no action’ type bitched?

And lets not forget the unaccompanied children everyone was afraid of in 2014. 350 of those scary beings were relocated to SC. Yet a bunch of these morons are OK with having unvaccinated native born kids run loose….their rights and all.

Colonel, I’ve been dying to relay this experience to you, knowing you’de relate. So Sunday I donated my entire day to interviewing kids for Rotary Youth Exchange. Now I feel this is a noble thing, and a great program. (And no, no Syria jokes). Anyway, last session I was in the map room. So a candidate would enter and we’d ask, “what countries have you selected?” And they’de list the five and we’d say “Please show us those on the map with no names.” First girl, 1-4, next boy 0-5 (on his last one he shrugged and said “good luck with that – and it was a European country”), next kid – 0-5. We also also asked them a simple math question. All three failed that one. Now I’m thinkin’ these kids could someday soon end up in Syria, calling in an support strike, or pumping rounds into a tube to hit a target. They can’t read maps, they don’t know where they are, and they can’t do math. Not a happy day. Fortunately the fourth candidate, a Hispanic girl, went 3-2 on her map quest, and did the equation right. She’s probably going to Europe.

She is the granddaughter of a famous Columbia TV News anchor, who married a Miss America. But she was smart as a whip. This child isn’t stupid, though. She is a result of her education. Not even all private schools teach geography.

I had heard that she was pretty sharp, the question was kind of stupid to start with. It is pretty funny though.

Bible Thumper November 17, 2015 at 2:39 pm

The point isn’t whether they could find the countries on a map. What’s important is that they participated. ;-)

I remember being on a train with some fellow overeseas students once from Frankfurt to Luxembourg. Have to switch in Koblenz. Get back to Lux – professor asks where is so and so. I dunno, he was on the train from Frankfurt, I saw him (didn’t sit with him). Kid calls an hour later, “how do I get back from Bonn?” Dork!!!!

The only people that believe Haley has a shot on the 2016 ticket are Haley and FITS.

All you fear mongers should be ashamed of yourselves. It, however, is funny to watch one fear monger try to out-fear another.

Either we have something to fear or we don’t. If we didn’t have to constantly beat the drums to get you idiots to wake up, it wouldn’t come off so brash. As it is, because you want to bury your head in the sand and act like it’s no problem to bring as many “refugees” as possible, we have to scream it out and it comes off as “fear-mongering”.

It’s funny how liberal extremists NEVER FEAR…as long as it’s someone else being brutally murdered….That’s also the definition of a coward…and don’t most of you admit to that trait?

Thousands of Christians being slaughtered by ISIS and Obama doesn’t do a damn thing.

ISIS blows up a Russian plane and ISIS (Syrian refugees) kills a couple hundred French and Obama wants to double down on allowing these terrorists into the country.

Will be interesting to find out who he is actually working for when he leaves office.

TARevolution November 17, 2015 at 2:26 pm

Obama has had some very insulting accusations made toward him. I did not doubt them, but I’ve been inclined to view him based on what I KNOW to be true, instead of the accusations…

But I think we can now say, Obama has separated himself from the civilized world, and is identifying w/ the animals, and barbaric killers, who scoff at reason and saturate themselves in hatred…

I think it is clear that Obama has extraordinary contempt for White people, Christians and Americans.

And only the people stupid enough to vote for him do not realize how profound, and selfish, it is to have one of Obama’s character with so much power.

I could only hope the media, the Democrat Party, and all the greedy special interest groups that comprise it, could get what they deserve. Then they’d know how the French now feel.

I listen to fits and the posters here about Haley’s ineptitude and demise and all the while she moves from political success to success. Her star continues to rise higher and higher.

It just shows how knowledgeable ya’ll are.

I’d vote for a ticket with Haley as VP. Right now I’m torn between Trump and Clinton, wonder if she would consider a VP slot for either?

Funniest thing I read/heard recently: Hillary criticized for wearing a wig and Donald (Mr. Trump) criticizing her wig…

The wonderful world of politics.

That’s right—the same Back-Stab-‘Em-Haley who ripped down patriots’ flag with NO voters voting wants to two-step on refugees

She and I-Lie-To-Cons-Joe Wilson just can’t let a day pass without getting down on their politically correct and corrupt knees

But hey—that long Tea Train is rolling and voters are going bowling and next year when we hand BOTH of them their two heads

They’ll be just like Nikki Setzler—Al Gore—and Obama—starring in the next failed sequel to the Dimwit-RINO walking dead !!!
