That’s a tough question to answer because no one knows the inside of their hearts so to speak.
What you have is a fundamental disagreement in society. Some think wealth redistribution is compassion, some think that letting people keep what they earn is compassion.
Even though those things are different, there can be a desire for compassion behind both.

Speaking of compassion – I’ve noticed all of them seem to be sharing personal stories of addiction now. Showing their softer side and acting like we need to help this people. Wonderful – but how does that square with all the Republicans who are constantly wanting to drug test individuals receiving govt benefits?
The drug test is not to deny benefits, but reform behavior.
Depends on the state. Some states cut them off with the first positive screening and other have rules about drug convictions making one ineligible. It is another waste of money law since it has panned out to cost the states more money than it saves in kicking folks off.
Then why don’t we drug test everyone who works for Government including Senators and Representatives. They are taking a heck of a lot more of our money for nothing than people on welfare.

There are things that can be done but redistribution of wealth is a dis-incentive to both wealthy and lower incomes. We need policies that encourage wealth creation.

There is no fucking way that the deficit will not explode under a 10% rate with no taxes for those making under $36000. Steve Forbes wanted a 17% tax rate when he ran and he was laughed out of the park by economists saying that it would balloon the deficit.
